Before we understand sports it's very essential to understand the importance of societies as well. I've already discussed the history of sports going back to the Ancient Olympics in Greece and then the Gladiatorial games in Rome.

Like any other civilization, Greek civilization also fell and then came the Romans. Romans gave to the world an 'emblem' to the modern world in the form of the gargantuan edifice created by them for the purpose of sports, known to the world as the 'Colosseum'.
The technology to build this stadium is evidenced by not only the structure standing, but also the planning involved in doing so. I'll deliberate over the Colosseum in some other blog, but right now I'll focus on technology instead. So, when a civilization collapses, the transfer of technology doesn't take place as facilely. And, the development of sports came to a standstill after the collapse of Romans, and revived truly only in the 19th century.
The technology used by Romans in building structures like Circus Maximus is somewhere taken from the Greeks as well. If you compare the images of the two then a few major similarities could be observed. Learning about civilizations, their behaviors is like a key to understanding sports.
Centuries later after the decline of Roman Civilization, Europe went to Dark Age. But, once they began reading, began learning of the ways of Ancient Greeks and Romans, the technology came in and thus, came a period known as Renaissance.
This term Renaissance holds in it, an entire concept. In our cricket frenzy nation, today hockey is in a pathetic condition. It's not just the game of a particular state only, all the states have to, they need to participate just like cricket. So, Sports also requires a Renaissance in our country.

Mass Communication and Journalism are very closely linked to the world of sports. It is therefore important to know this side of the sports industry as well. So, I'll try and explain briefly these components of the sports industry in tonight's blog.

If I want to convey my message to a larger audience in the country, mass communication and journalism is an important area. Mass communication as the term suggests is all about communication with the masses, with the people instead of communication with a few individuals. To understand the difference between mass communication and journalism, it's important to look at the definitions of the two.
Mass Communication: is the term used to describe the academic study of the various means by which individuals and entities relay information through mass media to large segments of the population at the same time. It is usually understood to relate to newspaper and magazine publishing, radio, television and film, as these are both for disseminating news and for advertising.
Now, let's look at the definition of journalism. Journalism: the activity or profession of writing for newspapers or magazines or of broadcasting news on radio or television. (Oxford Dictionary). In other words the entire process of news collection to news dissemination is what journalism is all about.
A reporter has to interview people, sometimes a person of official capacity. Similarly, interview isn't only of celebrities but also of common man. So, different socio-economic strata is combined then a story is confirmed. Among such interviews is profile interview. For such an interview, the interviewer must know the profile of the person he/she is interviewing. He/She should be aware of the popular public figures.
When you are interviewing a sportsperson, a cricketer, you should know his performance in both Indian and International context, his batting techniques, his bowling skills, etc. Sports is not just sports. According to the need of time, philosophies emanate.

This blog of tonight is more like a part two of my anterior blog that I wrote on the class lecture regarding Trade Fairs. I presented the reasons for which Trade Fairs are so essential for promotion of your product, however tonight I'll be giving the Advantages of Group Participation and the Major Components that are taken care of. So, without further ado, let's begin -

--- Selection of an exhibition. You do research, is that my target market, can I sell my product in that market, what is my competition?
--- You will also see the reputation of your organizer.
--- Any association who is not familiar to you, you do research data.
--- Any organizer can claim that I have 1500 visitors.
--- Some exhibitors are so expensive that you have to look at the cost factor.
--- Objectives in Show Planning. The 5 P's - Place, Presentation, Products, Promotion, Personnel.
--- Objectives SMART. S - Specific, M- Measurable, A - Acceptable, R - Realistic, T - Time
--- The Factors for Success include -
i) Motivation - There are some companies who set up a standard, but they are not motivated.
ii) Focus - There is no focus often.
iii) Product
iv) Promotion
v) Packaging
vi) Shipping - You have to often ship the goods on time.
vii) Pricing.

So, that was for you a few other tips shared with us in our class lecture with Mr, Tarun Diwan, and I tried my best to present the points mentioned by him as objectively as I could. Thanks for Reading.

The world of sports had the opportunity of attaching with itself the label of 'industry', which we call today as the sports industry. To ensure that sports receive the recognition of being called an industry, the Sports Goods Manufacturing Industry has a key role to play.
In India the Sports Goods Export Promotion Council was formed in 1958 and that has played a big role in India's economy. Now, I'll be putting forth some statements which were made during a class that we had with Mr. Tarun Diwan, and which I believe would explain us better India's position in export of sports goods.

SGEPC was established in 1958. India was badly in a need of foreign exchange at that time. Sports goods was core of the early things exported and since 2003 we look after sports promotion. This is sponsored by the Ministry of Commerce.
Organizing various promotional activities is a part of SGEPC. There are various policies that govern sports. There are some kinds of grants that come through Government. We not only take the problems of exporters but also of the government.
Due to global recession, the export of sports goods went down in 2007, but it is now rising. Golf is quite at the top level in items of import due to its equipment value.
China is the top exporting country of sports goods, followed by the U.S. U.S.A. is very strong in making heavy gym exercise machines and US also the top importing country of sports goods and it is also the single largest market of sports goods which are imported.
The items they are importing are not made in India at all. There are countries who don't export anything, like Malaysia, but they still survive because there's a lot of tourism there.
The Indian market is very big today, so everyone wants to come here and sell their products. There are international brands that are made in India. U.K. with 27% is the top destination of export of Indian sports goods, followed by the U.S (19%).

So, we've seen how India has come up all the way since its independence, in manufacturing and export of sports goods. And, the contribution of SGEPC in taking India's image among the top nations of the world is tremendous.

Tonight's blog has its roots in the lecture that we had Mr.Tarun Diwan from Sports Goods Manufacturing Council, the Ministry of Commerce. This was the class when we touched upon the topic of Marketing Through International Trade Fair among various other topics as well. However, the recently held Trade Fair in New Delhi gave me the idea to bring this topic up for discussion.

Well, many of us must have visited the IITF held at Pragati Maidan or other trade fairs in other places. But, have we ever pondered over the fact that why are these trade fairs held? Why do people from all over the country and in some cases (like IITF) come from all over the world to showcase their products for about a week or so?

Why Trade Fairs? Well, I can write a lot on that but the following points should make things easy.

Concentration of buyers and sellers.
Meeting face to face.
Audience open to receive information.
Presentation and inspection of products.
Immediate feedback and adaptation of communication.
Reaching prospects which are otherwise difficult to reach.
Viewing competition, its products and marketing techniques.

Yesterday, in part one we talked about sponsorship deals and media rights and the difference betwixt the two. And, like I said yesterday, we'll be going further in our understanding of the concept of media rights. So, without further ado, let's get the things rollin' now, shall we?

What is a Right? Yes, I should have asked this question yesterday, but still its not too late to bring up this question now, or is it? So, what exactly do we mean by rights. Well, if you look up at Oxford Dictionary (online btw) it says that right is a moral or legal entitlement to have or do something. In general, rights mean that you can or cannot do something. There ain't no interference of anyone else in it.
There are many facets subsumed in Media like print, television, Internet, radio, etc. How is income earned from media? The answer is the very reason that people buy this right and sell it. And, there is a market where this happens. Similarly, Indian Premier League (IPL) is a market.
Facet of media, Internet, if anyone can earn from it it is a source. Today, Internet websites offer you to watch live cricket matches. In a plethora of pages, the ones that have a higher view count than others find advertisers investing their money. Over the past few years a new strategy for advertising has emerged, now you can see ads coming during the live match, as pop ups or in a window below or side. So, advertisers are leaving no stone unturned.
Now, coming back to the example of BCCI that I gave yesterday, there are sellers also of different types. You buy the rights from the seller, whcih in this case is the BCCI. If a match is going on it belongs to BCCI. Now, if the BCCI sells broadcasting rights, then the ad pop up that you'll see during the match, won't have any control over it by the BCCI. That's how sellers are of various kinds. Even Doordarshan is for a fixed time allowed to show a match, beyond that they have to pay.

In this two part series I'll be deliberating over the subject of media rights and sponsorship deals by taking the example of Indian Premier League or IPL. This is also the same topic on which we had a class with Arjun Sir. Thought it was a good time to bring it up.

Alright, before I move on to media rights let's discuss in brief, what exactly is a sponsorship deal? First let's try and understand the meaning of the word sponsor. According to the Oxford Dictionary a sponsor is a person or organization that pays for or contributes to the costs involved in staging or artistic event in return for advertising. Deal made with such person or organization is called sponsorship deal.
There are various types of media; print, television, radio, etc. When they latch on a right and sell it to other broadcasters, there is a direct serving of money. Wealth is the economic value from any asset. At Industrial Revolution, the value of telecom spectrum was zero. The technology was simply not there. With the coming of telegraph, telephone, value grew.
So, sporting assets also have a similar value. The market understands and puts a value. The whole concept of media rights being auctioned did not exist before. There was a competitive bidding which was the highlight of IPL. So, new types of assets were created which are marketable.
Right now our Sports Federations, Ministries are generating from sports. The Board of Control for Cricket in India has so much money, while other federations have not identified the assets. The sponsorship value of Indian Hockey team is subjacent to Cricket. Sport is such an asset which you have to unlock and to unlock it, you need skills. If a person wants to do, be something in this industry, he/she has to discover knowledge.

Hello and welcome to another special edition of BM's!!! - My5ive. And, tonight we'll taking a look at some of the most efficacious Sports Agencies in the ever expanding terra of sports and commerce. So, without further ado, let's get the list rolling now, shall we?

1.) International Management Group : -

The global sports and media business company, International Management Group or IMG is among the most popular sport agency groups. IMG was founded by entrepreneur MarkMcCormack, in the city of New York. Initially the specialization of this agency was in the sport of Golf and Tennis. IMG is also commercially involved in an average of 11 major sports around the world every day.

2.) Octagon Worldwide : -

Octagon is a Virginia (USA) based company and is the global sports and entertainment content marketing unit of Interpublic Group of Companies. There are two divisions that make up Octagon; Athletes and Personalities and Marketing. Current clients of Octagon include prominent athletes like Michael Phelps, Justin Tuck, with several clients from NBA, NFL, etc.

3.) Wasserman Media Group : -

Wasserman is a sports marketing and entertainment company with global expertise in Athlete Management, Consulting, Media Rights, Partnership and Business Development, And Action Sports. With its headquarters in Los Angeles, Wasserman became one of the leading football management agencies in the UK after purchasing SFX Sports in 2006. WMG represents hundreds of athletes from baseball, basketball, soccer, etc.

4.) Sports Management Worldwide : -

SMWW is a sports agency founded in 2002 by Dr. Lynn Lashbrook with its headquarters in Portland, USA. It also offers online sports career training courses. SMWW course graduates co-represent professional athletes from Miami Dolphins and Philadelphia Eagles (professional American football teams).

5.) Creative Artists Agency : -

CAA is a prominent entertainment and sports agency headquartered in Los Angeles. CAA represents A-list and emerging stars in movies, television, music and sports and is often cited as the world's leading talent agency. Athletes such as Sidney Crosby, LeBron James, David Beckham, Cristiano Ronaldo among others have joined Creative Artists Agency.

This is the last blog with my crusade in trying to deliberate over the subject of sports management. And, tonight I'll be looking at some functions of Sports Management. In the anterior blogs I gave to you, the devoir of sports manager but tonight's blog will revolve around the devoir of the whole management of sports.
So, without further ado, let's get things rolling now, shall we?

Planning -
--- Yesterday, I talked of the resources of sports manager. Now, the question here that arises is that what are your objectives you want to rack up? You have to plan your resources. So, Planning is the first in line.
Objectives -
--- Once you have a stratagem, you have to commence putting that scheme in a framework. So, you have to set the Objectives.
Leading -
--- You should fraternize physically with a sporting event . You have to associate people and yourself. You can wear an event's gear. So, Leading comes as the third vital function.
Controlling -
--- No compartment of the entire game should go without Controlling, which is the last in this list of functions. People should not be left unanswered. Volunteers were trained for CWG '10 who were ready to help, provide information, not only to Indians but also foreigners.

Day 71.

Yesterday I talked about the allocation of resources and efficient and effective utilization of resources as the primary devoir of a Sports Manager. Well, tonight we'll have a look at some of the resources of Sports Manager and what kind of skills does he need in order to perform his duty.

Resources -
--- The first kind of resource is Human Resource. Sports manager is to select the best persons available in the market. He has to organize people from outside the system also.
--- After Human Resources come Financial Resources. One of sports manager's task is also to organize finance. In sports management, you have to see that adequate financial resources are ensured.
--- Next in line are the Physical Resources. If a an event you are managing is a multi-game event, then what kind of venues you are going to use? What kind of other physical resources you need, like media rooms, Internet facilities, etc?
--- Finally, we have Informative Resources. Formula One was held in India, a few weeks ago and everyone knew about it, whether they watched it or not is a different thing. However, many people knew of a Kabaddi Cup which took place just days after that. People, should be able to get information about the teams, timings, etc.

Skills -
--- Unless people are technically trained, they cannot perform effectively. So, they should have Technical Skills. You should have adequate knowledge of accounting, technicalities of a game, etc.
--- Suppose you are technically good, but lack flexibility, then you cannot be a good sports manager. So, you should have People Skills.
--- Sport manager should be able to communicate with others and for that he should have Communication Skills.
--- After communication, comes the task of convincing others. You should be able to convince the Board of Directors and this convincing needs Conceptual Skills.
--- And, lastly you have Decision Making Skills. After all the above skills if you aren't able to make a decision, then your whole project is a flop.

The other day I discussed with you fellow bloggers, the fundamentals of Sports Management and eventually came to the conclusion that in this multifarious filed, various areas such as Sports Directors, Professional Teams, Fitness Centres, etc. encompass. Tonight is like taking a step forth in this subject, as we'll be briefly looking at the devoirs of a Sports Manager.

But, first let's get the hang of the word Sports Manager. In layman's term we can define Sports Manager as a person who manages sports. Is that it? Is it so simple? The answer is definitely ambiguous. There is a definite need to go deeper in this definition and bring out the real meaning of Sports Manager.
The primary responsibility of Sports Manager is to ensure efficient and effective management of resources. Economics tells us that human resources are limited and needs are many. We have to use our labor in such a way, that we get maximum from resources. This is efficient management of resources.
Our end objective is social welfare. That is, we want to maximize social welfare. For that we have to maximize Total Utility - a measure of the total welfare of an individual. This is only meaningful on the assumption that utility is cardinal, that is, measurable. (Oxford Dictionary of Economics). Total Utility is assumed to be a function of quantities of goods and services consumed and the quantities of various forms of work done.
So, Sports Manager has to allocate resources in such a way, that he gets the most of that while acting in accordance to the best standards of professionalism. The other question which comes up at this moment is what are the resources that we are talking of ? What are the resources of a Sports Manager?, and what kind of skills must he/she possess in order to perform those responsibilities?

I'll be back tomorrow with answers to the above mentioned questions. As these are the very questions which will guide us to interpret and comprehend the real devoirs of a Sports Manager. Day 69.

Thursday, November 17, 2011 saw the doughty hockey team of S.G.T.B. Khalsa College steamroll another bona fide side which belonged to Shri Ram College of Commerce (SRCC) and yours truly was there watching the events unfold and what transpired was nothing short of an amazing moment which grasped every atom in the air and extracted the fun element out of it.
The Competition -

The Inter- College Hockey Tournament, University of Delhi was held between 14 to 17 November, 2011, and the final match was played betwixt the above mentioned teams in our very own Sant Harchand Singh Longowal Sports Complex, which has the very best facilities for indoor sports, has a pavilion, a gymnasium and offices. Not to forget the outdoor Basketball and Volleyball courts. Well, I can write a whole blog on that but, I digress.
This was match number 10 of the Hockey Tournament and Khalsa College's 6-3 victory over Motilal Nehru College, the other day made them the favorites for this final match against SRCC, who were a bit under pressure after their loss at the hands of Motilal Nehru College by 5-2.

First Half -

Since the commencement of the match at around 12:20 pm,Team Khalsa showed the reason why they had enough firepower to cause an upset by keeping the ball in their possession with some brilliant passes. The boys in blue who represented Team Khalsa were led by jersey number 4, i.e. Piyush Upadhyay and the very essential task of Goal Keeping was performed by jersey number 16, i.e. Naveen Chillar.
At 12:47 p.m.,Team Khalsa sent a wave of bliss among the crowd as they scored their first goal of the day and took a goal lead over the boys in red from SRCC. This further gave a boost to Team Khalsa and the midfield took the game by the scruff of the neck which helped team blue defeat team red by seven goals to nil. Soon after their first goal team Khalsa substituted jersey number 9 with number 18, 12:50 pm, to be more specific. As the half-time (which happened at 12:57 pm) drew nearer, Team Khalsa ensured that Team SRCC, go out with nothing in their hands.

Second Half -

The second half unlike the first, was full of penalty corners. Team captain's motivational words, kept Team Khalsa going as they scored goals in quick succession since the commencement of second half. A splendid goal was done by Team Khalsa at 1:26 pm as they took their 5-0 lead to 6-0.
Like I said before, it was all about penalties in this half and at 1:31 penalty chance was given to Team Khalsa but they couldn't capitalize. However, another penalty corner was converted into a goal at 1:33 allowing them to take a lead by 7 goals to nil. With the blowing of whistle at 1:34, the crowd and the players were overjoyed. The entire stadium was dancing to the beats of dhol and boys in blue didn't disappoint their home crowd and brought the crown with themselves.

In 1986-87, three of our hockey players Vimal, Harendra Singh and Satinder Sharma were chosen for the Combined Universities tour of the German Democratic Republic. Defender Harendra Singh became a senior international in 1989 and was a silver medalist in the 1990 Beijing Asian Games. Let's hope that these young players of today, make our college and our nation more proud and bring more glory by reaching the zeniths untouched.

The Doping Menace and Health of the Sports Persons

Human body is just like a machine whose functioning is oftenly interfered by various external and internal factors.In recent years, the menace of frequent drug consumption has assumed alarming proportions.Statistics from various medical centers reveal that number of cases of various addictions in all parts of the world is increasing rapidly.There is growing tendency in modern times of using drugs by the sports persons in the race to become human beings and to perform better on the field .The use of drugs in sports is against the true ideals of sportsmanship and the principles of Olympic movement, which is based on friendship,fraternity and international brotherhood.Sports is meant for good health, life style and fair competitions but the ugly head of drugs has changed its means and values drugs have been used to enhance sporting performance for more than 2000 years.There are many examples of deaths of sports persons due to drugs.These drugs start showing poor and bad effects.These bad effects are:loss of appetite, loss of sleep,reduction of fatigue,resulting in exhaustion, psychosis,crumbly,restlessness,agitation,tenseness,high blood pressure,addiction,dehydration muscle cramps,nausea,vomiting,constipation,promotion of growth tumors etc.It is concluded that doping is a menace which affects the health of sports persons very badly.Excellence in sports has to be achieved through strenuous training on modern scientific inputs,dedication and disciplined life.

Management : the process of dealing with or controlling things or people. (Oxford Dictionary).

--- The concept of management is basically a challenge through which we whip into shape a specific event. Management can also be defined as the organization and coordination of the activities of an enterprise in accordance with certain policies and in achievement of clearly defined objectives. Corporate management has to manage corporate objectives so that it covers corporate goals. Similarly, in sports we try to apply all those instruments of management to the Industry of Sports.
---You take the example of Buddh International Circuit, where the first Indian Grand Prix was recently held. There were various aspects linked to it. First they purchase the land, organize the land, then they create infrastructure, roads, electricity. In the process they hire different agencies. And, these are very high-profile jobs.
--- Another example can be taken of Common Wealth Games (CWG) 2010, and we can also get the picture of different aspects of Sports Management at a lower level, say college level.
So,Sports Management can include the following groups/aspects : -

Sports Directors (College + Universities) ; who are in charge of the sports department and have the liberty to hire and fire the other members of his department.
Professional Teams ; there will be building suppliers, suppliers of sports goods, sporting equipments. Professional team has professional accountants. These various professional teams, they coordinate with individual teams to meet the requirements.
Fitness Centers ; need for place which houses exercise equipment for the purpose of physical exercise.
Recreational Centers ; recreational facilities for the audience means, offering them telecom facilities, health, refreshments, emergency services, etc.
Coaching (of the professional teams) ; you can take the example of D.U., Khalsa College. The University goes to Sports Authority of India (SAI), and gets coaches. In basketball events or hockey or swimming events, we have specialist coaches.
Marketing ; when we talk of management in sports, we talk of the application of axioms, science, etc in marketing.
Youth Organizations ; in CWG, majority of people who bought the tickets were below the age of 45 and there were about 13,000 volunteers and 400 students alone participated from our college.

--- Were CWG 2010 effectively or ineffectively managed, well, we can debate on it later, but at least they happened alright. And, in the CWG, all the above mentioned aspects were taken care of. So, Sports Management is a very diverse field which encompasses various sectors. And, if we have to organize an event, we'll have to look at all those factors.

Day 67.

This is the account of the third and the final day of workshop held at the University Of Rajasthan. Two sessions were held on this day i.e. 13th November, 2011. The first session was presided over by a gentleman who spoke about Time Management. So, let's start the run-down now, shall we?
Session I (Key Remarks) :

Your teachers, seniors are where they are due to time management. This subject has a great relevance. We all know what time is, but giving a precise definition of time is very hard.
Time is a unique resource. Question is not who has how much time, but how he utilizes that time. Shakespeare once wrote in his play, ''I wasted time, and now doth time waste me.''
What is time management? It is doing right work at right time in the right manner. It is nothing but application of fundamentals of management in your life.
What are your time wasters? We have to know and identify the symptoms of a problem. One way is to prepare a time log of 15 days. You would be surprised to know that you are involved in ''unnecessary'' activities.
Someone has rightly said, '' Plan your work and work your plan.'' Decision making is very important in time management. People are miser while spending money and they don't realize that it can be made again, but wasted time cannot be made again.

Key Remarks -

Time is invaluable and important. There is an importance even in a second and there is importance even in a year.
If an athlete gets late by even a micro second, then that could cost him a medal in the Olympics.
However, total perfection is impossible.

The second session was presided over by a lady who works as a Radio Jockey (RJ) in Rajasthan.
Session II (Key Remarks) :

People say RJ is a new term. But, in reality it is an old term. Earlier it was called an announcer. Work is the same, but today its part of 'infotainment'.
Requirements for an RJ :

--- You have to be open to yourself. To speak only with style is not a prerequisite. There should be a connection value.
--- As an RJ you have to remain always happy.
--- You should know what's going on in your city. You should know your culture, local events, talents,etc.
--- You should have a lore of movies, songs, etc.

To end the session a talk was given on qualities in a journalist and following are its key remarks :

Observation and open-mindedness is important in mass communication and if you want to be a successful journalist.
Why do you want to be a journalist? It can be for sustaining your family. Is it for the usefulness of society. You ask yourself the question, how are you useful to the society?
A journalist must portray the following qualities;

--- Responsible and Responsive, Common sense, Authentic, Loyalty, Innovative and Sensitive.

Day 66.

This is Part 2 of Workshop Run-down attended in Rajasthan, organized by the Rajasthan University. Day 2 of the workshop consisted of a trip to Bhangarh near the city of Dausa and about 60 kms away from the Pink City (Jaipur) itself.
To say the trip was enthralling would be enough to wrap this report at this moment. But, that would be devilish on my part. So, I'll try and present y'all the account of Day 2 in a subjective fashion (which I normally don't do). Let's get the report rollin' now, shall we?
The Departure -
--- Our caravan that had students and teachers of both RU and DU left for Bhangarh at around 10:30 a.m. and boy, what a journey it was. Singing and dancing we reached our destination at noon.
Bhangarh -
--- Myths, Legends, Ruins and Ghosts are apt words to give a brief description of the Ancient Site; Bhangarh. The mere sight of this gargantuan edifice is totally mesmerizing.
--- Fort Walls, Gateways, Markets, Havelis, Temples, Royal Palace, Chhatris, Tomb,etc are some of the remains of this ancient township of Bhangarh.
--- Upon entering the premises, the temple of Gopinath can be seen on the right and the locals told me that the temple was 400 years old.
--- March ahead and you will come across 'Main Market', which is of course in ruins but once was a glorified bazaar. Now, I won't delve much into the history of everything as you can find it easily on a number of popular search engines. But, I would briefly let you know of what the locals had to say about the whole place with whom I interacted with.
--- Alright then, go ahead and take a left turn, march between dense trees, start smelling Kewra, and you find yourself betwixt Kewra trees whose plant is used to make perfume. Moreover, you can buy one of those plants for 20 rupees.
--- I used the words legends, myths and ghosts above. Well, for those of you who don't know, then the palace is notorious for the existence of ghosts/spirits inside it. Now, to have a reality check I first spoke to the gatekeeper who to my surprise affirmed the existence of ghosts inside the palace, on the other hand when I spoke to a few workers, they rejected the notion of any such thing and had been working over there fearlessly for 50 years.
--- Bhangarh is also infamous for the legend of Rani Ratnavati and a warlock whose story as narrated to me by a local was that upon being rejected by the Princess, the warlock by the name of Singhia cursed Rani as well as the entire place. When you climb up the mountain and go inside the palace, you would find a temple in the name of Rani Ratnavati.

Overall, like I said initially, the place is enthralling. Ghosts or no ghosts, you don't need to think twice before visiting this once majestic monument to now glorified ruins. Yet, looking closely and deeply, those ruins would lay before you the entire history of Bhangarh.

Day 65.

Welcome to another special edition of BM!!! where I'll report a workshop attended on Friday, November 11. This is the objective report of workshop on 'Enhancing Human Development Coverage : Skills for Reporting/Writing', organized by the Rajasthan University (rest details can be seen from the image above). The topic for the first day was Village Journalism. So, without further ado, let's get the report rollin' now, shall we?

Session 1 - Introduction (Moderator - Mr. Sanjeev Bhanawat - Professor & Head : Public Relations & Communications, University of Rajasthan)
Key Remarks Of The Session :

Mr. Kunjilal Meena (IAS) -

Country's 70% population is in villages. If we write a report on a farmer or a similar person, then that would amplify the value of journalism.
Request to all students. If you join a news agency, keep in view that you would write for rural areas. There is a dire need to do positive journalism.
If media does a positive job then a lot can happen. The importance of media will not end. It is such a thing, that nothing can shake it.

Mr. Rajeshwar Dayal -

It seems as though there is too much negativity in the country. Today's media is full of negativity. Last week there was G20 meeting. Among those 20 nations, 3 of them (France, Germany & India) were safe from recession. But, media doesn't tell that.
Similarly, when President Obama came here, he signed a deal that 50,000 Indians would be given job. But, media only talks of corruption.

Ms. Nandini Sahai (Director, ICG - International Center Goa) -

The population of Goa is about 14 lacs. This is all media hype that shows Goa as fancy,fun and beach loving place. There aren't many hospitals, buildings, schools, etc over there.
This is where the job of journalist comes in. For all of you journalism should not be a profession, it has to be a mission. A newspaper isn't only a newspaper, it has ideology behind it. Now, money is the bottom line for everybody.
We have lost the art of talking and interacting on one to one level. Journalists don't talk anymore. So, don't lose the human touch.

Mr. Manohar Prabhakar (Senior Journalist, Rajasthan) -

Today, there are people who respect the values of journalism, while there are those who have made journalism a business.
A lot of sensibility has come in the journalists, but we have to look for the medium from which it has entered.
Thousands of workers come to Jaipur from small villages, but no one covers their numbers. No one covers their plight, etc.

Session 2 (Key Remarks) :

Ms. Nandini Sahai -

Journalism should never be joined for money. There are 45,974 newspapers in India, including 5,354 daily newspapers in 100 languages. I would say that this is an overload of information. How many of them write about things that really concern?
Media actually feels that you all are interested in knowing what Shahrukh Khan is doing in Goa or Fashion Week, but they don't talk of real issues in Goa. You should be questioning, you should be reading between the lines.
There are ethics also in journalism. There are so many do's and dont's in journalism that are being flouted. Newspapers are calling each other names. For eg; In 26/11, you had dead bodies in bags. Some senior journalists actually opened those bags to get the face of dead victims. You are not supposed to get hysterical and report a situation.
Media should not be a part of a problem but part of the solution. As a journalist you don't have to be sensational, you have to be sensitive. Papers are making a distinction between what is interesting and what the people are interested in. Media should have a conscience, but cannot take on the role of conscience activism.

Session 3 (Key Remarks) :

Mr. Anil Lodha (Senior Journalist, Rajasthan Patrika) -

Ever since the arrival of electronic media, every person feels that he should have a mic in his hands, become a reporter. People who enter journalism for recognition aren't hard working people.
Journalists receive greater recognition and respect in rural areas rather than urban areas.
Write for good journalism . Write on the changes occurring in family, society, villages, etc.

Are Schools and Colleges Right Place for Talent Identification?

When participating in sport of any kind we have all known of at least one situation where our sporting coach or local sporting authority has had the daunting task of selecting a special team of talented individuals to compete in higher or advanced level of competition.The difficult part of selecting the advanced group is deciding which individual is suitable for the team and which individual doesn't.The great question is when and how do we fairly identify who will get into the selected team or training squad.

The biggest problem faced by our coaches and other local sporting bodies are what is the right time to identify talent and what should be the criteria for identifying talent.Answer to the above titled question is yes, because school forms the basis for the establishment of world class athletes.Achieving a high level of performance in sports is greatly depends upon two things,first thing is, the type of training program which an athlete has undergone and the second one is ability of the athletes to meet the demands of competition at international and national level.The process of identifying the most talented athlete is to involve them in an organized training program.Talent identification at the correct time helps coaches and the local sporting bodies to train athletes for that sport in which he or she is best suited and have necessary potential.

Sports Event Management

The application of the management practice of project management to the creation and development of sports.It usually consists of conceptualization, planning,budgeting, and execution of activities such as sports shows,exhibitions, conferences , sports events etc.Sports management is not very well known in India. Cricket being the dominant sport, event management usually centers around it.

It includes effective mapping out of the process for planning first class sports events,which is called "blue print" of the event.Taking a "blueprint" and turning it into an event will leave a lasting impression on the attendees.

Event planning includes site selection, agenda management, all event related print materials i.e. invitations, welcome packets etc.,promotional items, team building,rentals,theming,catering,entertainment,transportation,set-up/breakdown,staffing,media,post event reporting.The hosting of sporting events,be they large international events or smaller niche interest events, has huge and long lasting impacts on the local environment,economy and industry with an insight into the strategic management of sports events of all scales and nature.The framework offers a planning process that can be used to firstly understand the importance of a strategic approach,and secondly how to implement strategies that can achieve successful sports events over the short and long term.A no. of institutes in India and abroad are offering post graduate courses in sports management.Taking it as a career,one can earn a lot,but it involves back- breaking work.

Management of Inter-University Tournaments

To gain best results in inter university tournaments the proper management is the basic and most valuable aspect of conducting any inter-university tournament of the best level. Before conducting any such kind of tournament in which players from different places and background participate the concerned committee has to take care of the following aspects for the successful conducting and management of the tournament:

These all aspects raise the proper managerial skills and make the tournament a good and rich experience.

Day 64.

Welcome to part 2 of 'My 5ive', where we are discussing five names, five sports agents who with their awesome negotiating traits and tremendous wit have made millions for their clients, for the players colligated with them. Yesterday, I gave you five names, here's five more who cannot go unnamed.

5.) Don Meehan -

Donald E. Meehan is a hockey player agent for National Hockey League Player's Association (NHLPA). He is known for his unique style of workimg. Instead of approaching players that are already in the NHL (National Hockey League), he approached the families of young talents like PatLaFontaine, who later on made it to the 1983 NHL Entry Draft. He is also the president of Newport Sports Management and has over 100 clients such as Jarome Iginla.

4.) Mark Steinberg -

On the left side of the image, you have Golf's most decorated player, Tiger Woods, and along with him on right is his agent Mark Steinberg who has been representing golfers since 1992. As Wood's agent, Steinberg has negotiated endorsement deals worth ''hundreds of millions of dollars''. He is currently a Partner at Excel Sports Management, where he heads the professional golf division.

3.) Neil Fairbrother -

Man on the right is Andrew Flintoff, one of the most recognizable faces in the world of cricket. And, with him ringing the bell is his agent Neil Fairbrother. Fairbrother is a former English Cricketer who retired in 2002. He then became the Director of Cricket at International Sports Management, a sports agency that represents several leading English test cricketers. Apart from Flintoff, his other clients are Marcus Trescothick, Steve Harmison and Graham Onions.

2.) Scott Boras -

Sitting with his client Alex Rodriguez is his agent Scott Boras, who over a span of 28 years as an agent has represented hundreds of players on all 30 major league Baseball teams and has participated in a number of high-profile negotiations. He is also the President of the Boras Corporation, a sports agency that represents roughly 175 professional baseball clients. Only this year his firm negotiated nearly $444.5 million in contracts, over $120 milion more than any other firm.

1.) Aaron Godwin -

Even in the image he can be seen negotiating. Well, that's Aaron Goodwin for you, a sports agent for players in the NBA (National Basketball Association) and also represents Women's National Baketball Association. He was the intial agent for Baketball player LeBron James and negotiated deals which paid James over $135 million, including a $90 million deal with Nike. In the year 2004, he was ranked eighth on Sports Illustrated's list of Most Influential Minorities in Sports.

Day 63.

In my anterior blogs, I explained to y'all what sports agent is, and how he takes care of the business. An agent has to be a good salesman also. Well, tonight we'll be looking at 5 stupendous sports agents, who due to there amazing negotiation techniques and wittiness are able to prove a boon for their clients.
So, without further ado, let's get tonight's list rollin' -

5) Tom Condon -

The man standing in the center is Thomas Joseph Condon, an American Football Agent. Sporting News in the year 2006, named him the most powerful agent in NFL (National Football League). In 1991, he joined IMG (International Management Group), a global sports and media business headquartered in New York and has been the one of the most successful agent in Football history. Among his clients are Tony Romo, Peyton Manning and LaDanian Tomlinson, who are cogitated as MVP's (Most Valuable Players) of the game.

4.) Matt Sosnick -

Man on the left side of the image above, is Matt Sosnick, a San-Francisco based sports agent in the game of Baseball. Among his achievements apart from handling players like MLB (Major League Baseball) star Dontrelle Willis and Marlins Pitchers Josh Johnson, are that he was named by Forbes' Magazine, the most influential young people in Baseball in the year 2008. Also, he was the subject of a book called 'License to Deal' by Jerry Crasnick.

3.) Arn Tellem -

Arn H. Tellem is a great example of a man representing two sports. Yes, he is a sports agent who has represented players from both Baseball and Basketball. Sports Business Journal, in 2006 named him the Most Influential Agent in sports. As the principal of WMG, a part of Wasserman Media Group, a global sport and entertainment agency headquartered in Los Angeles, Tellem oversees the agency's athlete representation. In Basketbal, he has added up to more than $210 million as his client's salaries which include players like - Tracy McGrady and Jermaine O'Neal. While in Baseball, Tellem is best known for his negotiation for client Chase Utley's 7-year $85 million arbitration contract.

2.) Jorge Mendes -

You all must be familiar with Portuguese soccer prodigy Cristiano Ronaldo (on right), well then acquaint yourself with Jorge Paulo Agostinho Mendes (on left). Mendes is a Portuguese football agent and heads the GestiFute company, which provides agent services for footballers. When in 2009, Ronaldo was transferred from Manchester United to Real Madrid, it was reported that Mendes made £4 million from Ronaldo's £80 million. Mendes is amongst the most influential football agents in the world and has even had Chelsea Football Club's coach Jose Mourinho as his client.

1.) Leigh Steinberg -

How can we forget an agent who was an inspiration for fictional sports agent Jerry Maguire in the film of the same name, with Tom Cruise playing the role of that agent? This certainly pushes Mr. Steinberg to the number 1 position in tonight's list. But here's more about him. During his 35-year career, Steinberg has representated more than a hundred professional players in football, baseball, basketball, golf, boxing, volleyball and Olympic Sports. Among his clients are NFL star, Steve Bartkowski, Basketball star John Starks, and various others. His clients have donated over $600 million in charities and scholarships.

Day 62.

Like I said yesterday, that in part 2 I'll be taking up a few other exigent roles that a Sports Agent has to play and I also hinted at taking up the Indian scenario as well. So, let's start part 2 of 'An Agent's Devoir' -

--- Sports Agents are used to broker and negotiate contracts for their clients which also include endorsement contracts. Apart from this task for which they receive some percent ( I mentioned yesterday), they are also responsible for making recommendations in regards to player's options.

--- Coming to the Indian scenario, let's take the example of Cricket. Most of the Indian players are either from a low or middle class background. M.S.Dhoni, captain of Indian team. He has been made rich not only because of his batting or wicket-keeping, but his agent has made him rich. Today, he is endorsing products ranging from a ceiling fan to branded shoes. All the endorsements that Dhoni is doing, the money is not directly going to him, it's going to the agent.

--- So, managing a player is now a big industry. An agent needs to be canny, he needs to have foresight as all of this is a gamble. One might wonder how this is a gamble. Ten years ago Dhoni or Yuvraj didn't know what they will become today. No sponsor, no commodity, no company goes directly to the player.

--- Apart from locating income sources, agents often handle public relations matters for their players.The biggest job of agent is Celebrity Management. What does he manage? :

a.) Endorsements - [Advertisements],

b.) Scheduling - [Appointments],

c.) Account Management - eg, if a player has made 10 crores a year, then how much tax will he have to pay.

--- Multitasking is another cardinal element that an agent must possess. Sometimes an agent has to do negotiations on behalf of more than one client at one time. The number of players that an agent or his agency can handle in total are interdependent variables. Damage Control is also the job of sports agent. Damage Control is to protect the goodwill of the corporate, protect the interest of corporate, sponsor.

This is the end of this 2 part series on an agent's duty or responsibility. It is a very demanding field indeed as you have to be highly motivated, willing to work for long hours, and most importantly like I said above, the ability to multitask. Day 61.

As you can see from the image above that a sportsman is standing along with another man who looks like some kind of apprentice to him. In the terra of sports this apprentice is known as an agent, a Sports Agent.
Let's look at some of the quintessential roles that a sports agent plays -

--- Before we move any forth, let's look at the definition of sports agent.-
''The compassing and hammering out a deal for employment and endorsement contracts for a athlete is done by a person known as sports agent.''
Sports Agent cuts out a deal for athletes, however the term used for them is sport agent and not an athlete agent. This shows that the agent is not only an agent for a particular athlete but for his sport as well, thereby being a cardinal component of the industry of sports.
--- Agent gives players some money and buys players' rights. On the basis of virtues that an athlete possesses, his Brand Value is calculated. Let's take the example of boxer Vijender Singh. Among his qualities apart from boxing well, is that he has good looks, is smart, can speak well, etc. He is a boxer and to fight he needs vest,shorts,shoes,etc. His agent can cut out a deal for him through which he'll have to show Company Logos.
--- The sports agent receives betwixt 4 and 10 % of the athlete's playing contract and about 10 to 20 % of athlete's endorsement contract. Some examples of agents striking a hefty deal for their players include -
a.) Aaron Goodwin - He represents players in NBA (National Basketball Association) and is known for getting LeBron James a deal with Nike of $90 million.
b.) Tatiana Ovechkina - Agent to her own son, Alexander, Ovechkina brokered a 13 year contract worth $124 million.
--- To promote the career of an athlete, his agent aides in marketing that athlete or the products linked with the player. Communications with team owners, managers, coaches, and other individuals are also a part of a sports agent's province, who are lawyers or have a background in contract law, due to the length and complexity of their contracts.

Alright then. This is the end of part one. There are a lot of other devoirs that a sports agent has to carry out, which I shall be writing in part two of this series. I'll also take the example of the scenario of sports agents in India, and a lot more is coming up, so wait until then.

A London court has handed out jail terms to the three players and their agent found guilty in the spot-fixing case drawing the curtains on one of cricket's most sordid and shameful sagas.Salman Butt has been sentenced to two and a half years jail, Mohammad Asif has got a one-year jail sentence and his fellow fast bowler Mohammad Amir six months. Mazhar Majeed, the players' agent, has been sentenced to two years and eight months.
They will serve half the time in custody and then be released on license , with conditions which, if broken, would see them back in detention for the remainder of their term.
The four men had been charged with conspiracy to accept corrupt payments, and conspiracy to cheat in regard to the Lord's Test against England in August 2010, when the three pre-determined no-balls were bowled - two by Amir and one by Asif, orchestrated by Butt and arranged by Majeed. While Amir and Majeed had pleaded guilty before the trial began, Butt and Asif denied the charges and were found guilty by a jury on Tuesday.

Day 60.

Marathon : - A long-distance running race, strictly one of 26 miles and 385 yards (42.195 km).

This coming Sunday, i.e. Nov.6, 2011 a marathon will be held in our city of Delhi. Yes, an event known as 17th Salwan Cross Country Run is to be held this Sunday and in this event around 40,000 students are envisioned to latch on. Now, I won't be going into much details about this marathon but, this news has certainly given me something to write about the concept of marathon.

The Ancient Marathon -
--- In order to get the hang of a sport, you also need to look at its history. Marathon, which is usually run as a road race has its roots in Ancient Greece where a soldier named Pheidippides, who was a messenger from the Battle of Marathon, ran to Athens. If Greek historian Herodotus is to be believed then, the messenger ran from Athens to Sparta and back to Sparta covering a distance of 240 km or 150 mi each way.

The Modern Marathon -
--- Marathon's avatar can be located to the Modern Olympics of 1896, however the distance was fixed only after 1921. The winner of the first Olympic Marathon was a Greek water-carrier, by the name of Spyros Louis. According to the Marathon Race Directory of Marathon-world.com, more than five-hundred marathons are contested all over the world each year. Also, larger marathons can have tens of thousands of participants.

Extra Notes -
--- With the vast majority of competitors being recreational athletes, marathon forms an essential component of the sports industry. Marathon allows athletes to show their fitness. It even allows the common people to understand the importance of staying fit.

--- If I am not wrong, then most of the times the winners of these marathons are from Kenya and they have their dominance when it comes to Middle-distance and long-distance athletics. Our athletes should also train hard and try hard and surely, we can also do the same. Events like Salwan Marathon are an excellent opportunity for those 40,000 participating students and their teachers and their parents to help develop a sporting culture in the country.

Day 59.

This is an unusual blog but the subject is related to this course. As the title and the image suggests, I'll be dealing in brief, with the topic of Gym Marketing and Gym Industry. But before we go a bit deeper in in gym marketing, let's try and understand the meaning of the word marketing.
--- Marketing : - The action or business of promoting and selling products or services, including market research and advertising. (Oxford Dictionary).
--- In other words, marketing is a function. It is an organizational function. It is also a set of mechanisms for creating, communicating, and distributing value to customers and for managing customer relationships in ways that benefit the organization and its stakeholders.
Now, let's grasp the meaning of the word gym. I am sure all of you are aware of what a gym is. But, let's look what the Oxford Dictionary has to say about it.
--- Gymnasium : - A place, typically a private club, providing a range of facilities designed to improve and maintain physical fitness and health.

According to the data provided by the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI), the gym industry is worth 14,000 crore rupees.
Today, wellness is the daily concern with lifestyle. The earning from gym industry is burgeoning rapidly. This is because every individual wants to remain healthy, wants to be fit.
When we talk about marketing, customer has to be taken into consideration. Today, customer is the king, he is God and if a person wants to market his gym equipments, he cannot take him for granted.
Now, tourism industry is very closely related to gym industry and a couple of days back I even wrote about Sport Tourism. I'll just say that apart from tourism, health tourism is a very big business. There are a number of seven star hotels in North-East India and in Southern States like Kerala, where spa, gym and other health facilities are being doled out.

Day 58.

So, the F1 Indian Grand Prix's hubbub is finally over and beyond question, India has delivered quite decently. I know most of you already know what transpired after the race was over this past Sunday, but still I thought of sharing some facts about the race. Let's get things rollin' now, shall we? -

The race held on 30th October 2011, was the first ever Grand Prix held on Indian soil in which German driver Sebastian Vettel of Red Bull - Renault team pulled a stunning victory.
This win was Vettel's 11th win of the season. The world champion started at the front and hardly faced anyone daring to take him over. This was also his second Grand Prix in a row and, he also had the fastest lap of the race.
At position number 2 was, the British driver for McLaren and the 2009 champion, Jenson Button. The third place went to the Spaniard, Fernando Alonso, who is currently racing for Ferrari.
As far as the Indians are concerned, the only Indian driver, Narain Karthikeyan of Hispania Racing F1 Team finished at 17th position, while the only Indian F1 Team Sahara Force India driver Adrian Sutil finished at 9th position.
Other interesting facts of the 1st Indian GP were -

-- The different sizes of the F1 Indian GP Trophies were -
i) Winning Driver and Constructor : 550mm high,
ii) Second Place Driver : 450mm high,
iii) Third Place Driver : 400mm high.
-- The Indian Grand Prix had the potential to generate around $170 million in revenue and employ about 10,000 people. Also, tickets worth 1.25 crore rupees were bought in the first three hours of the sale.
-- Now, this one is a knee-slapper but true, that a dog ran into the track on the first practice session.
-- Sergio Perez had a new record for a Mexican driver collecting 14 points, the previous record was held by Hector Rebaque with 13 points in 4 years.

-- Tourism : the commercial organization and operation of holidays and visits to places of interest. (Oxford Dictionary)
-- Sport Tourism : Pertains to travel that engrosses viewing and/or taking part in a sporting meet nesting separated from its common surroundings.

-- Today, Sport Tourism is playing the role of a catalyst in global tourism industry. As far as the global travel industry is concerned, the sector of sport tourism is advancing like a speedball (no pun intended) and equates to six hundred billion dollars, a year.
-- Tourism is a product and over the past decade sport tourism has mutated into an academic field of study. Today, sport and tourism are developed nations' most pursued leisure trip.
-- If we look back in time, then we would see that in Ancient Rome and Greece, people used to travel to distant places to participate in sporting events. So, in the modish scenario, the roots of sport tourism can be traced to the ancient practices, making the concept a better and refined version.
-- A couple of days ago, I wrote about state industry partnership and how it can improve standards of sports in India. Besides, using Sports for socio-economic development, for instance promoting intersections of sport with various industries - e.g. Tourism, can help a lot. With India's wide geographical diversities, a lot of amazing abodes are there for those who love adventure sports and the picture above is an example of such activity.
-- Today, business tours colligated with sporting activities is becoming quite trendy. Sports like Golf are a prime example of such activities. Golf tours organized at different venues, allow the players of this managerial sport, an opportunity to do business deal, which in turn has introduced the concept of corporate golf, but I digress. Yesterday, Formula 1 race was held in India and the eyes of the world were set upon us. There is little doubt in my mind that F1 race wouldn't have resulted in some bulky business deals.

Day 56.

Erstwhile, I wrote about Sports Gambling and explained to you, the development of the Casino games and the Industry. Well, tonight's blog is about some of the finest movies made which have splendidly showcased the concept of gambling in casino games. So, rather than zeroing in on movies made on gambling in casinos, my list will try to focus on 5 movies which show how this industry was established and is run.
Let's get the list rollin' now, shall we? -

1.) Casino -

Directed by Martin Scorsese, the 1995 made movie Casino is a reflection of the best movie ever made on gambling in casinos. The movie is packed of stars like Robert De Niro and Joe Pesci and the two of them flawlessly bring their characters to fruition. The movie is about mobsters who move to Las Vegas, Nevada and their engrossment in casinos of the 1970's and 80's. The movie perfectly shows the development of casino games industry in Vegas.

2.) Ocean's Eleven -

Directed by Steven Soderbergh and made in 2001, Ocean's Eleven is the story of a gang which sets out to rob a casino. George Clooney who plays the role of Danny Ocean delivers an impeccable performance. The execution of robbery in casinos has been shot in a very suspensful manner and really makes the ripping of three casinos very entertaining. The success of this movie was followed by two sequels.

3.) Bugsy -

Made in 1991, the film Bugsy was directed by Berry Levinson and stars Warren Beatty as Bugsy Siegel. Now, this movie ain't exactly about the gambling in casinos but rather it shows how mafia people established the industry of casinos in Las Vegas in which gambling happened later on. It's a story of Bugsy's vision to establish something worthy and in doing so he doesn't care how much money he's spending. Moreover, it shows how Flamingo, a very prominent casino joint was set up.

4.) Rounders -

Rounders was made by Director John Dahl in the year 1998 and stars actors like Edward Norton and Matt Damon. This film is about the notorious terra of high-stakes poker and loan sharks in which two friends step foot, to earn cash in order to pay a huge debt. The game of poker is displayed in an exciting manner gambling scenes are really engaging and give a tutorial about the game of poker.

5.) Owning Mahowny -

Owning Mahowny is based on a real-life story about gambling addiction and was made in 2003 by Richard Kweitniowski and stars Philip Seymour Hoffman in the key role of Dan Mahowny. Mahowny, who is a bank employee is a compulsive gambler who due to his quirks, is involved in the largest fraud in the history of Canada. This movie is like a detailed description of a man's gambling groove in the industry of casino games.

- India is a developing country and a lot of money has been and is being spent on constructing sporting infrastructure. Sport is a very peculiar thing. In India, Sport is a subject of State. For sports to develop in all the Indian States, it is to nth degree vital, that states work along with industry and this is possible under the concept of PPP (Public-Private Partnership). Now, I won't delve much into PPP, but talk briefly about the role of states.
- India is a federal union of states comprising twenty-eight states and seven union territories making a total of thirty-five. Now, these states and union territories are further subdivided into districts. Every state plays a far-reaching role and every one of them have to be looked as a nation. A nexus betwixt State and Industry could certainly aide in delineating sport axioms of India.
- When we think about Olympics and we talk about India in them, then what if each of the 35 states and union territories could give us one Olympic medal. Surely, we would be among the top three nations in the medal tally by the 2020 Olympics. But, we have to also see how states can use assets, lands? What can the states do? Well, one thing that can be done is to divide states into two parts with sports for the public and sports for excellence. Also, states don't have all the resources, so they have to be careful while rewarding the athletes.
- There is also a need for governance and policy reforms to achieve excellence in sports at State and even National-International level competitions. States like Kerala who aren't big enough are a good example in this category. About seven new stadiums in different districts are in the building process on the PPP model. They are also creating sport facilities where children can play. The ulterior motive being to initiate sport as an activity in children before they graduate.

In the last 2 blogs of this series, I talked about sport as a career and also discussed with you the prerequisites to grasp lore about sport, if it is a career. Tonight, in part 3, we'll be moving a tad deep in what we learned yesterday. So, without further ado let's get things rollin' -

The industry of sports offers a wide range of fields to work in, to talented and skilled people. Every year, the demand for coaches, trainers, sport managers, nutritionists, sporting event managers, sport commentators, etc, is amplifying. Some people are cognizant of what they want to actualize in this industry while there are others who just want to find a job and work in some capacity in this industry, and there are also those who aren't even aware of the opportunities, training, etc. to make a career in sports.
I mentioned some points in last night's blog about the prerequisites for the better understanding of sport as a career and I also divided the two facets, and now let's look at some approaches with which the gap in those two facets can be shrunken. -

a.) The first question or the first approach is about the training which is provided in schools and colleges. The question that needs to be answered is, whether this training is aligned to the requirements of the sports environment?
b.) Today, broadcasting of sports is playing a more complex and more crucial role than ever before, and the commentators are also a very vital component in this field. So,we have to see if there are enough sports commentators?
c.) The quantity and quality of the resources that we are discussing to bridge the gap is another point which is of paramount discussion. It has to be seen that only trained and skilled professionals join this industry and in their numbers are also to be noted.

It is all about connecting the dots. How do we align a work force which is mentally and physically able to take up sports? We need 1.33 million school experts. for every 1100 people on the field, we need 55 coaches, 15 trainers, 25 medicine experts. Also journalists, bio-mechanics, media, etc. We need at least 8 lac 71 thousand coaches by 2017. (Figures given at FICCI, thought they were worth mentioning).
Today, if 100 kids are introduced in sport in schools, then 90-95% leave it. There is a need to provide some job opportunity, so that they can make a career in the industry of sports. There are no indications of slowing in sports. And, this is where our Government, the NGOs, as well as the people interested in sports, need to capitalize.

To conclude, I think I can say that Sport is a business. I think I can also relate it to the definition of Democracy, given by Abraham Lincoln, i.e. it is of the people, by the people, for the people.
Similarly, Sport is a people's business, it is of the people, by the people and for the people. If you want to work in or at least around some areas of this industry, then even under cases like budget dearth or losing of a team, etc, you must be able to work together with other people.

जिसमें सूचना प्रसारण मंत्रालय ने बी .सी सी . आई से मामले में सीधा हस्तक्षेप करने को कहा|

मंत्रालय का कहना हैं की नियो द्वारा क्रिकेट प्रेमिओ को क्रिकेट कमेंट्री सुनने से कर दिया गया हैं|

आखिर स्टेडियमो से क्रिकेट क्रेजियो का टोटा क्यों

अभी हाल ही में पांच मैचों की एकदिवसीय श्रंखला जो भारत और इंग्लैंड के बीच खेली गयी| भारत ने इंग्लैंड में हुए अपने सफाए का बदला भी ले लिया| लेकिन एक चीज़ जो सबसे कम प्रतीत हुयी वो थी दर्शको की संख्या

(१) यहाँ हैदराबाद में शुक्रवार को श्रंखला के पहले मैच में स्टेडियम लगभग आधा भरा हुआ था | उप्पल के राजीव गाँधी स्टेडियम में ४० हजार दर्शको के बैठने की जगह हैं| लेकिन वहां केवल २२ हजार लोग ही मौजूद थे|

(२) करीब करीब ये ही हाल मोहाली में भी दिखा| वहां भी मैच को लेकर कोई खास उत्साह नहीं दिखाई दिया| इधर भी आधे से ज्यादा सीटे खाली रही|

(३) देल्ही में भी हैदराबाद वाली स्थिति थी |

(४) श्रंखला के आखिरी और निर्णायक मैच के दौरान कोलकाता के इडेन गार्डन में भी अब तक का सबसे कम दर्शको का सूखा देखा गया| जो हैरान करने वाली बात हैं| इडेन गार्डन जो ६७,३०० सीटो वाला एक बड़ा स्टेडियम हैं वहां भी केवल २०००० हजार दर्शक ही मैच को देहाने पहुंचे|

आखिर क्या कारण हैं

(१) इसकी शुरुआत (आई .सी.सी ) विश्व कप और (आई .पी एल ) के बाद शुरु होती हैं|

(२)इसका कारन इंग्लैंड के हातो भारत की इंग्लैंड दौरे पर मिली शिकस्त को भी माना जा रहा हैं |

(3)दूसरा कारण अत्यधिक धकाऊ क्रिकेट को भी माना जा रहा हैं जिसके कारण खिलाडी चोटिल हुए और उनकी परफोर्मेंस गिरती रही| जिससे दर्शक अभी तक उभर नहीं पाए हैं

(४)इसका एक और कारण आई सी .सी द्वारा क्रिकेट को ज्यादा रोचक बनाने के लिए लाये गये नियम भी हो सकते हैं |

(५) चोथा कारण T20 मैचो का आनंद ले चूका दर्शक वर्ग अब वन डे मैचो से मुह मोड़ रहा हैं| वरना लगातार मैचो में जीत और पूरी की पूरी श्रंखला अपने नाम करने के बावजूद स्टेडियम में सुनापन समझ से परे हैं| इस बार उपमहादीप में वन डे मैचो में दर्शको की कम दिलचस्पी को निराशा जनक माना जा रहा हैं|

(६) इस बार त्योहारों के दौरान मैचो के पड़ने के कारण भी दर्शक मैचो के टिकटों पर ज्यादा खर्च नहीं कर पाए|

Formula One will boost Indian sports

Force India's team principal and managing director Vijay Mallya said Wednesday that the inaugural Formula One race in India is a major step for Indian sports.

'I have been involved in motor racing for over 30 years, and it?s one of my greatest passions. I brought the first Formula 1 car over to India in the 1980s and it was always a dream of mine to one day see this great nation host a Grand Prix,' Mallya said.

'This weekend is a very significant moment and I?m extremely proud,' he added. 'It?s a major step forward for Indian motorsport, and for sports in general in our country. We are all looking forward to it.'

Mallya said being the first home race for Force India, the Silverstone-based team was determined to put up its best showing at the Buddh International Circuit here.

'This is a very important weekend for Sahara Force India and we are all determined to be as competitive as possible. I want to savour every moment of what will surely be one of the most spectacular events of the season and the start of a great Formula 1 tradition in India,' he said.

Mallya said the race will increase the popularity of Formula One in India.

'There is already great interest in Formula One in India, but having our own race has created a real buzz and will take the sport to an even wider audience. As soon as the ticket sales were announced, people were clamouring to buy them. Hosting the premier racing series in the world is a great privilege and there is great excitement in the country,' he said.

Asked about the team's latest partnership with Sahara India, Mallya said: 'This is yet another great milestone in the history of this team. The Sahara Group brings fresh investment. It has played a very important role in the development of sport in India and is an ideal partner to help us achieve greater success in the future.'

This weekend, Mallya will also select the one best driver from a billion young driver hunt.

'I made the decision to begin a driver hunt in India about 18 months ago. It was a massive undertaking to hold open trials in seven cities, but I was delighted by the quality of the drivers who came along to show their skills. Last week the top 10 youngsters visited Silverstone to complete their final assessments based on driving talent, fitness and media training,' he said

In yesterday's part, I laid down before you few points about career in sports and tonight, in part 2 of this series we'll be looking at some prerequisites that would aide in thriving a sports culture in which sports as a career is more sought after by the youth.

Youngsters, who today want to be a part of the industry of sports often find their dreams shattered due to the subsisting loopholes in the management system. What we'll do is try and find some keys to solve this problem.
Sport is not a fancy, it is a way of life, as old as life itself. Today there is a need to develop a sports education framework in our country and Ministries like Human Resource Development have a pivotal role to play in doing so. Also, the assistance from Nations and their experts, where sporting culture is well established, can provide a lending hand in shaping the youth of India.
Some of the necessities to make sports a career in this industry include -

a.) Firstly we need to distinguish all the sectors which are covered. This step also encompasses the identification of differing fields like health and fitness, spa, sports medicine (unani, ayurveda) as a part of sports.
b.) The second thing is to identify the employees of this industry. We need to question that are people who design the posters for a match or even design tickets, a part of it?
c.) Lastly, keeping in mind that sport is a State subject in India, we need to get the hang of the prerequisites of each State. There is also a need to determine those wants of States on the basis of different areas of skill.

There is another side to the points I just mentioned. This side includes the dispensing of the resources that together with the clamoring side only, can help get the picture of career in sports industry. And, some of the points included in this are -

a.) First of all, we need to find out about the courses that are being made available in various schools and colleges of the country. Also, we have to recognize the training programmes which these schools and colleges are proffering.
b.) Now, in the first point which I wrote for the demand side, I covered some fields in sports industry . But, we also need to understand the fact that awareness in target segment is very crucial. So, we have to recognize if there is cognizance in the segments which are a part of development programme.
c.) Lastly, from the system that we create, we need to be aware of the number of trained people flowing every year. This also includes the flow of people on the basis of their skills.

With this we come to the end of part 2 in this series. Tomorrow, in the final part I'll be dealing with some other points which can help prune the gap amid the two different sides that we dealt with today. Day 52.

In this series of BM!!!, we'll be looking at the career prospects in the sports industry. We'll also be covering the requirements that exist to make sport a career. In this part I'll just give you a general idea of the careers in sports industry and the changing scenario. As I've already deliberated over some careers in my previous blogs, so my area of concern would revolve around the strategies to aide in making sports a career.

When we think of sports, games like cricket, football, tennis, etc come to our mind. But, the industry of sports is like a gargantuan edifice and has a lot more hidden in it than just a game. This industry is impacted in some way or other by individual participation also. When we go to watch a cricket match, we buy tickets, we buy food items, memorabilia, or when we watch it on t.v., then also we pay our cable operator. All of this generates direct and indirect economic activity. And, the amplifying number of participants is a litmus test for the sports industry.
Sports is a field based on mechanics. In addition to the traditional careers that most people think of, over the years this field in its amelioration has produced several specialized career prospects. There are sport scientist, physios, expert coaches, tournament managers, media managers, sponsorship managers, etc. The demand for these people has been on a constant rise in the industry of sports.
In the constantly changing world of sports industry, televised broadcast of sports has come up with outside opportunities. 20 years back, sporting events were heard on the radio, then television took the ball and ran with it and now, we have different channels for different sports. All of these events have produced outside chances which I just wrote.
The industry of sports is a competitive one. Apart from all the glitz, glamour and gold, the career that an individual pursues in this industry, whether it is in the broadcasting, media or in the business or in the coaching area, there is ample amount of competition that he/she will find surrounded by. However, on the positive side, a person can get a job in this industry or at least in some areas of it, if he/she can make use of their skills, but for that they have to start thinking in an ingenious way.

If sport is a career, then we need to get the hang of the requirement and how are we going to fulfill those requirements. Also, the loopholes that are present in our system. prevent the talented people from pursuing a career in the industry of sports.

Erstwhile, I wrote a blog on Betting in the Industry of Sports and familiarized you with the concept.Tonight, in another special edition of BM's!!! - 'My 5ive', we'll be taking up 5 things to learn a subject. And, as the title and the image suggests, I'll be acquainting you concisely with Gambling and the Industry plugged into the games played in the casinos.
So, without further ado, let's get the list rollin' -

1.) Las Vegas -
When we talk of casinos and gambling, the first place that comes to mind is Las Vegas, Nevada in USA. Rightfully so, the state of Nevada especially the city of Las Vegas is the best known destination for gambling in the entire world. Gambling has also been legal in the state of Nevada from the year 1931 forming the backbone of the state's economy. Today, Vegas is the fastest growing city in US and a major income generator for the States.
2.) The History -
Talking of Las Vegas and the augmentation it has had in developing the industry of casino games and gambling, we need to go through a bit of its history. Vegas has been identified as a gaming center as well as a resort destination since the 1930s. As the population grew in Europe, people started migrating to America to the city of New York and its citizens included lawyers, doctors, engineers as well as the mob or the mafia people.
3.) The Builders -
Nevada which is in the west and was a desert at that time was never sought by anyone as a lucrative place until a few men saw the potential concealed in it. Mobsters from New York such as Benjamin Siegel a.k.a.Bugsy Siegel was the first person in history who made the decision to build a casino named Flamingo. Bookmaking operations and expansion of the gaming industry in the form of organized crime was his ulterior motive. Another man who took Vegas to new heights was Businessman, Howard Hughes, who first rented all the hotel rooms and later purchased the casino hotels from the mafia.
4.) The Legalization -
The legalization of gambling in Nevada took place in 1931 and the Great Depression of 1929 had much to do with it. The people who were against gambling began to be cognizant of the fact that gambling in a legal form could be an answer for financial distress and a way to stimulate the economy. So with the legalization of casinos, parimutuel gambling (a system used in gambling on horse racing, lottery games,etc) also began spreading in the whole country. Cities like New York had other sources of revenue which I mentioned above, but in the case of Nevada gambling was legalized as they needed a source of earning.
5.) Extra Notes -
Today, out of the 50 states in the US, 37 have legalized lotteries and 26 have independent casinos. Casino games in which gambling activity is the most, include table games like, blackjack, craps, roulette and baccarat. Also, gambling is of different types like, Fixed- Odds Betting which is a form of wagering against odds offered by a bookie, Parimutuel Betting in which all bets are placed in a pool, Sports Betting in which prediction of a game's result is done along with placing of wager on the result.

There is a lot of history not only behind the construction of gambling/casino industry in Nevada or Vegas but in other states as well. However, Las Vegas being the most faddish and recognized city in this industry becomes the best option for anyone to introduce this industry. A lot can also be discussed on the topic of Great Depression and the legalization of gambling, but I'll do it some other time.

Day 50.

This is BM!!!. This is the 50th day of BM!!!. This is the 50th consecutive day of BM!!! and boy, I'm absolutely amazed when I look back and see at how far we've come in this sojourn of the bloggerland.

If you folks can bethink, then I did a blog which briefly introduced us with the concept of Sports Betting. An issue which is indeed a serious one and constant checks and balances are needed to provide the fans a fair play. However, this activity in some way or another takes place and movies are an interesting way to have deeper lore about this activity.
So here's for y'all a list of 5 movies which are based on the concept of Sports Betting -

1.) Eight Men Out -

Made in 1988 and Directed by John Sayles, Eight Men Out is perhaps the most caught on movie made on betting in sports. This film is based on the infamous scandal of the Chicago White Sox Baseball Team whose 8 players had a deal with gamblers to intentionally lose the World Series in 1919. The gambling syndicate was lead by Arnold Rothstein, played in this movie by Michael Lerner, pays the team extra bucks to play badly. However, the truth breaks out after two years and 8 members of the White Sox are indicted and banned for life from the game.

2.) Diggstown -

Directed by Michael Ritchie in 1992, Diggstown is a story about betting in the sport of boxing. A con man named Gabriel Caine, played by James Woods proposes a grand bet that he will find a boxer that can knock out 10 men in a boxing ring. Then comes a ton of double-crossing and surprises till the end. A really entertaining movie with some good humour and sports betting too.

3.) Two For The Money -

This movie was made in 2005 and was Directed by D.J. Caruso and stars actors like Al Pacino and Matthew McConaughey. Brandon Lang ( McConaughey), a former football player is a score predictor in Las Vegas who later on meets Walter Abrams (Pacino), who is an entrepreneur in the sports betting business. And, together they start placing bets in sports and earn tremendous amount of money. The movie has its entertainment value and sports betting in particular is very well highlighted.

4.) Let It Ride -

This comedy-action movie on sports betting was made by director Joe Pytka in 1989 and stars Richard Dreyfuss as Jay Trotter. A day comes in the life of an unsuccessful gambler who cannot stay away from horse racing tracks. But, a day comes when he wins every bet that he places. The movie covers the issue of placing bets in horse racing in a light comedy manner which is its best thing.

5.) Bookies -

This small budget movie was made in 2003 by director Mark Illsley. The movie is about college students who start their own bookie business by taking bets from different people. However, as the wagers grow, they are trapped in a precarious situation where they win and lose multiple close calls. Furthermore they plan to fix a basketball tournament and act like professional bookies.

Day 49.

This is the auxiliary run down of the 3rd Global Sports Summit by FICCI. I've already covered the 2 days of seminar in my anterior blogs. But this one contains the unprecedented session which took place on Day 1 and it's a session which cannot really be overlooked.
So, without further ado, here's for y'all, the extra report. -

1.) Mr. R V Khanna, Senior VP, FICCI -

Sports Federations in India are classified as NGOs, they don't come under RTI (Right To Information) Act. Its only appropriate that they should be accountable. On one side there is regulatory framework, on the other side there is autonomy also, so you need a balanced framework.
We would like to see FICCI involved beyond cricket. Sport distinguishes between national identity. Sport is also as much a part of education as any other academic stream.

2.) Sonali Chander, Sports Editor & Anchor, NDTV -

It is admirable on the part of Mr. Ajay Maken to bring the Bill despite the differences with his own party members.
Larger issue is the accountability of Federations. People are saying that Mr. Maken has climbed down due to the pressure by the BCCI.
We have IOC, saying that Indian Government is trying to take over, regulate sports federations. What is Mr. Sharad Pawar, BCCI, scared of?, about RTI?

3.) Mr. Ajay Maken, Minister of State, Sports & Youth Affairs -

There are many other initiatives that are overshadowed due to the Sports Bill. One of these is the requirement of sport personnel, coaches.Our National Sport Institute in Patiala had only 173 coaches from 1980-2008.
I went to China about 15 days back. They have a Chinese Institute of Sports Sciences. They have different departments fro every aspect, sports psychology, sports medicine,etc. We have decided to form a National School of Sport Sciences. By the end of November this will be registered into Societies Act.
We are trying to give more power to sports persons. We are asking for Athlete's Advisory Council, of athletes who represented their sport. We are asking for 25% reservations. We are asking for tenure norms.
In the last 3 years we have spent 453 crore rupees or $100 million in sports. We would like sports federations to work in more autonomy. Had this bill in place, Mr. Kalmadi would not have been the Chairperson of the IOA. I don't think there is any substitute to RTI. Transparency in financial functioning is badly required.

This is the run down of the second day, i.e. today Oct, 21, of FICCI's 3rd Global Sports Summit. Yesterday, I did the run down of Day 1 and we shall commence from Session 5 which is was the point of today's initiation.

Session 5 - Creating Profitable Sports Properties :
Moderator - Mr. Sukhvinder Singh, Managing Director, Libero Sports : -
(Key Remarks) -

1.) Mr. Vivek B Singh, Jt. Managing Director, Procam International -

Sport has really grown on age. Creating profitable sport properties is already happening. Due to the overshadowing by cricket we can't see building of sports properties in sports like horse racing, soccer,etc.
Apart from cricket, every other sport is joining its place, it's happening slowly.

2.) Ms. Shagun Chowdhary, Qualified Olympic Shooter -

Shooting is a sport where anyone can come to participate. You can relate it to cricket. Money is the driving force.
We have developed huge stadiums. Due to the demand, there are hundreds of shooters. Over the past six years there have been more than 100 medals.

3.) Mr. Vijay Bhardwaj, Head-Research and Consultancy, Sports 18 : -

There are brands looking to connect with people, which was missing 15 years ago. The key element to look is to look at sports as industry. In sports there are smaller and niche properties that can be created. Brands are entering as people are willing to pay.
There is a need to go premium. Indian television is still young and amateur medium, unlike US or UK, where it is 50 years old. If you have a medium that old, there are patterns set. There needs to be an understanding of market and understanding of commerce, use of brands, use of technology as an asset.
The key element is to identify and open up the revenue streams. Secondly, we need to understand that the consumption pattern of sports is changing. 20 years ago it was just about switching on t.v. and watching a sport. Today, its more about participation.

Session 6 : Dynamics of League system in Sports : Leveraging Hidden Demand -
Moderator - Mr. Anupam
Key Remarks :

1.) Mr. Vijay Bhardwaj, Head-Research & Consultancy, Sports 18 : -

If you are a businessman and you have a monopoly, then you are happy. You need competition to survive, if you don't have it, you are dead. Leagues are basically of people with similar mindset, who decide how many elements will be structured. League is actually older as compared to association.
Leagues in US were earlier localized, but after the growth of transportation, it spread. Leagues are nothing, but a way to put sport competition in pattern.

2.) Mr. William Wilson, Soccer United Marketing : -

Concept is very essential. Soccer is a sport that's very unique. In US, challenges are same like English Premier League or Spanish La Liga.
India is a new territory. We see this region with anxiety in interest like what will happen between IMG and Reliance?

3.) Mr. Rathindra Basu, Corporate Communication & Event Management : -

After the phenomenal success of IPL, we saw a lot of IPL like leagues mushrooming in various states. You have somehow, cricket becoming a national integrator. We have natural propensity of making a league.
When you start a league and make it financially viable, you need to look at basic infrastructure, how do you get people to buy in these leagues?, you have to create a fan infrastructure.

Session 7 : Will Sports (Development) Bill Strengthen the NSFs? -
Moderator : - Mr. Gaurav Kalra, Sports Editor, CNN-IBN

Key Remarks -
1.) Mr. Mathivanan.N, Executive Partner, Corporate Law -

The Sports Federations should be strengthened. There is a requirement of good governance of sports federations, their accountability, their responsibility (social responsibility is an important item), their activities should be independent otherwise it loses autonomy.
The governance should be on the basis of fairness. Fairness in representation of Board according to constitutional measures. You have to empower the Executive Board, so strengthening, giving due power to executive board is important.

2.) Mr. Morad Ali Khan, Shooter & Arjuna Awardee -

When we compare Sports Management efficiency in India with foreign, then we realize how far behind we are.
There is nothing in particular in this Bill, which tells taht you cannot run the federations with your money, with your process of development.Problems come with personal issue. If we remove them, there is nothing in the Bill that's against the federations.

3.) Mr. Viren Rasquinha, CEO, Olympic Gold Quest -

I have read the bill myself and I don't think the bill is intrusive or draconian. Don't give generalised opinion that the bill is intrusive.
At the end of the day, implementation is the key to legislation. If you bring in accountability, corporate sponsors will come in. The key here is to educate the people about the bill. You cannot please different stakeholders. Come to a consensus to what's a good sports bill in India.

Session 8 : Role of Corporate in Sports Development and Innovative Strategies -
Moderator : - Mr. Varun Palival -

Key Remarks -
1.) Mr. Charles Borromeo, Padamsri, Senior Manager-Sports, Tata Steel : -

One of our tiers is at rural areas, we have sports for all. We invite community, people to identify the talents, in football, in archery,etc.
Second tier is training mode. We have 15 training centres. Wherever the children are interested, we identify and because of these training centre models they are able to get better education.
We in corporate world don't expect immediate profit. We want to create a healthy environment where we are operating.

2.) Mr. Dharmesh Jain, Chairman & MD, Nirmal Lifestyle : -

Most children become serious sportspersons between 8-15 years. In India, unless you are a Sachin Tendulkar, parents pull you away from sports in 7th standard.
In France, schools actually give marks for sports. If marks are given for sports at the grassroot level, dramatic changes can happen. With sports the key is to have a long-term vision and not a short one.

Day 47.

Good evening friends and welcome to yet another acutely objective report edition of BM!!!. And, I will equip y'all with the session by session recap of the events that transpired at the 3rd Global Sports Summit 'TURF 2011', organized by FICCI (Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry).
So, without further ado, let's get the report rolling now, shall we? -

Introduction/Inauguration - (Key Remarks) :-
1.) Dr. Rajiv Kumar, Secretary General, FICCI :

Purpose of Summit is to try & foster greater Public-Private Partnership (PPP) in the country. Until Corporate Sector comes in a much bigger way, sports won't develop. Priorities given to sports must be higher in India. Smaller countries like West Indies, East Germany, have given so much emphasis to sports which provided them national identity.
There is a huge sports infrastructure deficit in India. Like any other infrastructure for eg; railways, etc, sports infrastructure must be given equal emphasis.
Sports Development won't happen until you involve private sector. Sport is not maximizing profits only, but National cause also.

2.) Ms. Lata Usendi, Minister of State, Women and Child Development, Sports and Youth Affairs, Chhattisgarh :

Over the past 10 years, athletes from Chhattisgarh have earned about 150 gold medals. We've strived to provide better facilities in hockey. We've tried to colligate sporting world with corporates.
We've come forward with PPP in the field of Boxing. And, the 37th National Games will also be held in Chhattisgarh. We've created new programmes for the development of sports.

3.) Brig. K P Singh Deo (Retd), Chairman, Sports Development Commission, India Olympic Association :

One is astounded at the phase of development in Chhattisgarh. We were surprised by the revenue generated by Chhattisgarh in tribal areas in sports.
Our programme 'Vision 2020', at IOA, in Sports Commision has found universal acceptance. First by FICCI, second by Ministry of Sports and just yesterday by the Planning Commission.
The Common Wealth Games (CWG) 2010 had glimpses of PPP. We need to do analysis. This partnership can be very useful. The internal investment in CWG has been very good. The return on investment done by the Government, Sports Authority of India (SAI), has given 101% back, but it has fallen short for IOA with 125 medals.

4.) H.E. Shekhar Dutt, Governor, Chhattisgarh :

We need to have a large mass of human resources developed. Sports is a hugely useful tool of management. India needs to have good managers who can lead in all the aspects.
Sport is an organized activity. It cannot be achieved without all ingredients set out to form an industry. Sport is also a huge business, a multi-million dollar business.There has to be convergence of the corporate spirit with development of sports.
India has to become a destination for medical tourism. We find that Sachin Tendulkar or Zaheer Khan, go for surgical repairs outside. Why can't we have eminent sport surgeons in India ? The time has come to take initiatives to set up sports science institutions in India, to cater Indian and world market.

Session 1 : Public Private Partnership - Developing Sports Infrastructure : ( Key Remarks)

[Moderator - Mr. Rishi Narain, M D, Rishi Narain Golf Management Pvt. Ltd.]

1.) Mr. Desh Deepak Verma, Director General SAI :

In our Indian context, Sport structure is a support and facilitation service. Time has come to attain sports seriously as a business.
In CWG, one of the criticisms was about the leagacy use of our sporting infrastructure. For using the infrastructure and also creating it, the role of private sector is very important.
One issue in PPP is use of stadia infrastructre for non-sporting activities as many times it is done in the name of creating revenue generation, but sometimes such activities take over sporting activities.

2.) Mr. Tushar Pandey, President & Country Head, Strategic Initiatives, Yes Bank :

Sport is a multi-billion dollar industry and is viewed a major entertainment venue. There are gaps in policies across the states in India. Lack of accountability plagues most sports authorities. Apart from some states like Gujarat and Rajasthan, PPP for infrastructure and development has still not been integrated in sport policies of states.
Despite being a state subject, the allocation from centre is decreasing over the past 4 years. There are also several impediments to development of sports in India, like; sports research hasn't been developed as a separate department in the Ministry of Sports.
Till you develop infrastructure, athletes cannot become the centre point. So, the government should not talk of medals without infrastructure.

3.) Mr. Andrew James, Director,Asia and Australia Populous :

The difference between what is happening in Delhi and London is the planning for legacy. The key is that you have to plan the stadium and then built it.
So, a part of legacy is to try and assess what buildings will be used after the games. So, temporary construction is also a key.

Session 2 : Triggering Investment in Sports and Creating Sports Culture -

Moderator : Mr. Yogesh Kocchar, Director, Microsoft Corporation India.

(Key Remarks -)

1.) Mr. Tarun Dewan, Executive Director, Sports Goods Exports Promotion Council : -

Today, 70% of trade happens in sport apparels. There is sport equipment made in India of world level. Why investment in manufacturing of sporting equipment hasn't proven to be lucrative, we have to see that.
Sporting culture needs to be developed at the grass root level. Sport has to be treated at par with health. Any state doing investment in sports, in the long-run their expenditure in health will come down.

2.) Mr. Robert G Davies, Consultant, British College of Sports -

India has a massive target of getting 500 million people trained. We have to understand the importance of sports in terms of social development, in terms of helping India's skill agenda, in terms of corporates.
Another important thing is starting sports education. The key is human capital. In terms of development of sports we should be like farmers and plant the seeds. So, the key is human resource development.

3.) Mr. Yogesh Kocchar -

About 80% of sports persons coming today are from rural India. If you go to New York you find football jerseys, memorabilia that helps in promoting sports culture. In India, not even 10% is done with cricket.
The answer lies in packaging. We need to package goods to sell it in new areas.

Session 3 : Sports as a full time career : -
Moderator - Mr. Rajpal Singh, Additional Director, FICCI :
(Key Remarks) -
1.) Mr. Gurap Singh :

Until and unless India makes an environment where coaches parents and children come together, winning in Olympics will remain a dream.
We should also teach our players how to manage stress. What type of diets to be taken? They should be provided with world class infrastructure.

2.) Mr. P D Sharma - President Rashtriya Life Saving Society :

There is a need to make parents realize that sports is necessary for a child's sound body. Sport gets discipline, it gets time management.
It needs a lot of money. Our training is equipment oriented. You need safety boats, safety lifeguards. This is a new kind of game, which is more of a new opportunity.

3.) Mr. Ben John Gittus - Senior Programme Manager, UK Sector Skill Council on Sports :

We need to find out how many organizations, level of degree courses exist in India. Sports needs to be recognized as a subject in schools, in higher education, sports medicine.
Next thing is job creation, job development around athletes. There are many other jobs than coaching which can be developed around athletes. If you create a sector you also create conditions for the growth of sports.

Session 4 - Making Sports a State Asset :
Moderator - Mr. Siddhanth Aney, Senior Correspondent, Sports Illustrated India :
(Key Remarks) -

1.) Mr. Hakimuddin Habibulla, Founder, Winning Matters -

We recognize that each state plays a key role. Each state needs to be seen like a nation. We have 35 states and Union Territories and if each of them could give us 1 Olympic medal, we would be among the top 3 countries of medal tally by 2020 Olympic Games.
Sport is a state subject in India. World class sporting structure could help create revenue. So, size of a state doesn't matter. Ex - Manipur is number 1 in National Games including all sports. So, we have to see how states can use assets, lands.

2.) Mr. H S Kingra, IFS, Chairman & MD : -

States are divided into 2 components, sports for masses and sports for excellence. Don't have any problem with Chief Ministers being head of sports, bu they should not put their own vested interests forth. Infrastructure should be in vicinity of states.
There is a village where there is a FIH approved hockey ground, but no one is willing to play. Let us tell the political master, nobody should underestimate the power of states. Sports is a state subject and will remain.

3.) Mr. G P Singh, IPS Director Sports, Chhattisgarh : -

Whatever budget is given to you, you have to use it in the right way. Most of the time when we start building infrastructure we spend money on unncessary elements. Money spent on ground is zero. This is due to technical incompetence.
Make a climate, where we recognize the importance of sports. In Chhattisgarh, three things can be seen.- Training, Infrastructure and Creating Sports Eco-System. Infrastructure wise we are very weak and talent wise we have tribal belt.
Sports do not mean galleries. It means right grounds. We have 1 course on infrastructure front. We are focusing on low-cost budgeting. The construction agency sent me a budget of 40 crores and the financial committee cut it down to 10.5 crores.

4.) Dr. Amit Mallick, CEO & Secretary, National Games Secretariat, Kerala : -

All the places where sporting infrastructure construction takes place, we make sure that management persons come in. So, management is very important in construction.

:--सिर्फ येही नहीं सहारा ओलंपिक के प्रशिक्षण पर भी खर्च कर हैं ताकि भारत में ओलंपिक मैडल लाये जा सके जब पिछले साल होकी खिलाडिओं ने विद्रोह करा था तो सहारा ने प्रतेक खिलाडी को दो दो लाख रूपये की पुरस्कार राशि से सम्मानित किया था|

:-भारतीय संचार ग्रुप एयरटेल और नोकिया :- ये दो ही ५० -५० करोड़ रूपये प्रति वार्षिक की दर से मुख्या तौर पर खर्चते हैं| |

करने के साथ -साथ खिलाडिओं को जॉब भी देता हैं |

Yes, ladies and gents of Readerland, tonight's blog will revolve around the concept of betting in sports. I'll be only giving you a laconic introduction to this concept, as I'll do a detailed deliberation in the upcoming blogs. Since we are dealing with sports betting, let's try and grasp the meaning of it.

When you do predictions in the results of any sport, you predict the result of sporting events, like who will emerge victorious ?, what will be the ranking of a player?, or even the precise result. That's when you are doing sports betting.
Now, once you are riveted in the first aspect and you take the second step, then you're totally engrossed in this concept. And, the second step being, placing a wager/money on the result of a particular sporting event.
Another interesting aspect of sports betting is that the people riveted in it don't have their control or regulations on the objects of a game. So, if there is a soccer match to happen, then sport betters cannot influence the kick-off or other facets of the game being played.
From the betting that an individual does with his neighbour on their favourite Cricket team to the betting performed on a large-scale, all of them involve a process. However, large-scale betting requires a gamester or bookie to perform the tasks. Some infamous scandals in history will always be recalled when anyone is taking up this subject for discussion. In the phase of amateur sports, the biggest scandal to hit the sporting world, and particularly to U.S., was the indictment of Chicago White Sox baseball team. Eight players were paid about $10k by a gambler, by the name of Joseph Sullivan. This incident is recorded in the history books as perhaps the biggest sporting scandal ever.

Day 45.

So, the phoenix has risen from the ashes and is primed to take on its prey. Yes, I'm talking about the ''new and refined'' National Sports Development Bill 2011 which has been resurrected to show the country that its cacoethes to regulate have now been neutralized. So, let's examine the version 2.0 of the NSDB 11'.

I'm quite certain that by now y'all must have read or heard about the NSDB 11' being presented again by our Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports, Mr. Ajay Maken after his primary initiative being disdained and eventually rejected.
I've already discoursed about the previous draft which was proffered by the Sports Minister, in my anterior blogs. So, you can check them out if you haven't yet.
And now let's see what the revised bill brings to the table this time -

The previous draft was heavily criticized as it was chock-full of Regulations. And, there was hardly any effective clause about the Development of Sports in India. This version is being claimed to have wiped off those things from the bill which were the reason for its rejection.
Is that really the case? Really? Really? Firstly, if you can recall, then the previous version fixed the age limit for the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) as well as Federation Chiefs to 70 years. They couldn't hold office beyond that age.
Secondly, two terms of 4 years each were affixed for the above mentioned office bearers. Surprise, surprise. These 2 negative points of the previous version are still pretty much intact in the new avatar. I've written in detail about these 2 points previously, so I won't delve much into it.

Let's move on to what's new about this new draft bill ? -

When this bill was proffered earlier, there was a stiff battle that ensued betwixt the Ministry and the BCCI over the whereabouts clause of WADA (World Anti-Doping Agency), which called for the athletes to tell about their daily whereabouts to the authorities. However, this issue has supposedly been resolved as the Ministry has allowed the governing authorities to say the final word.
The 'new and improved' bill also has given allusions that its regulation urges have been toned down, by making adjustments in its RTI (Right To Information) clause. Previously the authorities were supposed to give details about the doping issues, player and coach selections, etc. But, in it's new avatar this bill has totally exonerated the federations from the RTI clause.

Alrighty then. We'll have to wait and watch how the round 2 of this battle amidst the Ministry of Sports and the Sports Federations takes shape. A few changes have definitely been made by Mr. Maken, keeping in mind the causes for which his previous attempt failed. The burning question now is whether the second time's a charm for the Ministry or not ?

In my anterior blogs I discussed about the Industry of Sports. I even cited the example of China to demonstrate the building and construction of this industry.
Tonight, we'll be looking at another quintessential ingredient in the amelioration of the industry of sports and that is the Participation factor, more specifically Individual Participation.
So, let's get the blog rolling now, shall we? -

Any individual household or firm that's engrossed in an activity which falls in of the 3 main components of Sports Industry is acknowledged to be an aide in the sports industry.
Those 3 components being -

Avocations that include participation in sport by an individual.
Avocations that involve visitors at spectator events of sports.
Avocations that revolve around following of spectator sporting events via any form of media.

You and I have a lot to do in the construction of the industry of sports. Every way in which we participate has an effect on the economy.
There are 3 ways through which we participate -

By taking part in some kind of sport like ; soccer, cricket, etc.
Taking part by attending any kind of sporting event like a football match, boxing match,etc.
We also participate by watching or hearing out a spectator sporting event on T.V. channels, Radio broadcastings or even Internet streaming.

Every way in which an individual participates whips up the economic activity, whether direct or indirect. However, all the three categories of participation take time.
Individuals also chip in to the augmentation of sports industry by the purchasing of tickets for a match. Also the travelling cost to watch that match and the buying of mementos, food items, etc, all have their impact on economic activity which helps in shaping up the industry.

PUNJAB HERITAGE SPORTS GATKA

ਗਤਕਾ gatkā) is the name of an Indian martial art associated with the sikhs of the Punjab region It is a style of fighting with swords and wooden sticks. The Punjabi name gatka properly refers to the wooden stick used. The word originates as a diminutive of Sanskrit gada "mace".By conception, gatka is defensive as well as offensiveand focuses on infusing the physical with both the spiritual and mental.

The style originated during the Guru Hargobind Sahibs time, in which due to the severity of mughal opression over the Sikhs and the ruthless attack made on his father Guru Arjan dev, Guru Hargobind taught the art to the nihangs. However, during the British Raj, much of the martial art had been diluted and banned, and therefore this led to a division in two sub-style, called rasmi (ritualistic) and khel (sport) from the 1880s onwards. There has been a revival during the later 20th century, with an International Gatka Federation was founded in 1982 and formalized in 1987, and gatka is now popular as a sport or sword dance performance art and is often shown during Sikh festivals.

Since this revival, the term gatka has sometimes come to be extended to "Sikh martial arts" more generally, including the use of various weapons, more properly called Shastar Vidiya (Punjabi ਸ਼ਸਤਰ ਵਿਦਿਆ shastar vidiyā, from Sanskrit śastra-vidyā "martial arts"). The term in this sense, especially as used by Niddar Singh since 2002, denotes historical martial arts reconstruction of 16th to 18th century Sikh fighting styles.

History

The Sikhs have a long history of martial traditions, ultimately rooted in pre-modern schools of martial arts or śastravidyā of the Rajputs, and the kshatriya caste or India's "Martial Races" more generally.

Guru Hargobind propagated the theory of the warrior saint, and emphasized the need for his followers to practice fighting for self-defence. Guru Gobind Singh, the 10th guru of Sikhism, trained in martial arts in the Panjab. One of his achievements was the founding of Khalsa, the collective society that galvanized the martial energies of the Sikh community and formed the Khalsa Army of the Sikh Empire during the first half of the 19th century.In regards to training the Khalsa, he pledged that he would "teach the sparrow to fight the hawk".

Following the Second Anglo-Sikh War of 1848 to 1849 and the establishment of the British Raj, the Sikh martial traditions and practitioners suffered greatly. The British ordered effective disarmament of the entire Sikh community; even tools and farming equipment were banned.During the Indian Rebellion of 1857, the Sikhs assisted the British in crushing the mutiny. As a consequence of this assistance, restrictions on fighting practices were relaxed, but the Panjabi martial arts which re-emerged after 1857 had changed significantly

Instead of producing soldiers for warfare, the Shaster Vidiya had developed during the 1860s into a new fighting style called gatka (from the name of its primary weapon, the sword training stick) which was mainly practiced by the British Indian Army. As Sikh colleges opened in the Panjab during the 1880s, European rules of fencing were applied to Gatka, resulting in further alteration. This led to the formation of two gatka branches, rasmi (ritualistic) and khel (sport).

The system devised by Captain William Ewart Fairbairn and Captain Eric Anthony Sykes borrowed methodologies from gatka, jujutsu, Chinese martial arts and "gutter fighting". This method was used to train soldiers in close-combat techniques at the Commando Basic Training Centre in Achnacarry, Scotland.

Bow and arrow: either traditional Indian steel recurve bows or true composite bows made of wood, horn and sinew. Arrows used are usually fletched reed arrows with tanged steel points.

Khanda: traditional Sikh and Rajput straight sword

Peshkarj: dagger

Kukri: bent sword which broadens towards the point

Chakram: circular edged weapon that can be thrown. Smaller specimens can be worn like bangles and used as brass knuckles.

Bagh Nakh: leopard's claw, a spiked weapon worn on the hand similar to the Japanese shuko

Katar: dagger able to pierce armor

Training

With its strong link to the Sikh faith, gatka groups may train in a religious or semi-religious situation, such as in a gurdwara (Sikh temple). Akharas, usually associated with pehlwani, have also been founded with the exclusive purpose of teaching gatka. Gatka emphasizes having something in both hands eg two sticks, a stick and a sword, a sword and a shield or any other combination.Training with "both hands full" is believed to be an excellent exercise for coordinating the two halves of the body, a concept also found in many Filipino martial arts. The individual's preference for weapons, combination of weapons, and movement patterns leads to the development of individual fighting methods.

The foundation of the art is a movement methodology for the use of the feet, body, arms and weapons in unison. Gatka favors rhythmic movement, without hesitation, doubt or anxiety. The attacking and defense methods are based upon the positions of the hands, feet and weapon(s) during the dexterity regimen.

Chanting holy verses may accompany these exercises. The three-beat-per-cycle played by a drummer adds to the coordination during practice.

Revival

The International Gatka Federation (IGF) was founded in 1982 and formalized in 1987. It is based in Berlin and has chapters in Hamburg and Bordeaux.

In the United Kingdom, Baba Fateh Singh Gatka Akhara was established in East London in 1992, contributing to the establishment of the International Gatka Organisation (IGO).

Niddar Singh of Wolverhampton in 2002 founded a Shastar Vidya school, popularizing the term Shastar Vidiya as a replacement for gatka. Singh calls his style Sanatan Hindu Sikh Shastar Vidiya "traditional Hindu-Sikh martial arts" in order to emphasize the generically Indian (Hindu), pre-Sikhism roots of the style. The school has classes in Wolverhampton, Birmingham, Leicester, Slough and Hounslow. Niddar Singh puts himself in the tenth generation of an unbroken master-student tradition deriving from Guru Gobind Singh. His immediate teacher was Baba Mohinder Singh whom he met on a trip to India he took as a teenager.

There was a gatka tournament held in Oldbury in March 2006.Gatka was displayed during the celebrations of Hola Mohalla in Gurdwara Sri Guru Singh Sabha in Hounslow.It was also performed on the 2005, July 4 Independence Day parade on Constitution Avenue in Washington DC, United States Gatka also is performed as a stickfighting dance by the Indian community of Trinidad

Ladies and gentlemen of the Readerland. Welcome to the one of its kind blog, where you'll experience the facets of sports, like you've never before. Welcome to another exciting edition of BM's!!! - 'My 5ive'.
Alright I was just trying to do a facsimile of the people who are going to be a part of tonight's list and the image above is reason enough to reflect their persona.
Yes, we'll be taking up 5 names from the Indian Sports Broadcasting community, which includes both Radio and Television broadcasters. The contributions of these individuals in revolutionizing the way sports have been heard through radio or t.v. commentary is an off beaten path.
So, without further ado let's get the blog rolling -

1.) Ardeshir Furdorji Sohrabji ''Bobby'' Talyarkhan -

In the 1930's , A.F.S. Talyarkhan was among the very best and very first persons who took up Radio commentary at a time when there was no television. His specialization in this field was the game of Cricket. He could speak without intervals, except for lunch and tea, his unique phraseology and ability to do commentary all by himself, for about 6-7 hours, made people to congregate in middle of the streets to listen to his splendid commentary.
Among his other qualities was the fact that he disliked sharing his microphone with any other person and this is the very reason for which he had to give up his commentary and terminated his deal with All India Radio.

2.) Narottam Puri -

In the 70's and 80's, Cricket in India was growing in popularity day by day. A number of exceptional individuals made their voice heard and enchanted the masses by the dexterity in their commentary. Among those few men is Narottam Puri, who became a very recognizable face on the early days of television in the country.
His in depth knowledge of the game, his fine fettle command over the English language, made him the finest play-by-play Test Cricket commentator on the Doordarshan network.

3.) Jasdev Singh -

Another distinguishing personality in this list is Jasdev Singh. His voice was first heard through All India Radio Jaipur in 1955. He used to do Cricket commentary in Hindi language.
In his 35 years of commentary, he has also covered nine Olympics and six Asian Games. His expertise is not confined till here, as he has done play-by-play commentary in eight hockey world cups. In 2004, he was awarded with Padma Bhushan.

4.) Ananda Rau -

The charisma of radio broadcasting kept on amplifying due to personalities like Ananda Rau. He began his radio commentary of Test Cricket in 1943, via the All India Radio in a Ranji Trophy Match played in Tamil Nadu.
He covered more than 100 first-class matches and more than 50 international matches. His eccentric style of covering matches in English language took him to a level that is hard to achieve for many. He was given an invitation to do broadcasting from Lord's cricket ground in England.

5.) Sushil Doshi -

Another gem in the history of radio broadcasting of sports was Sushil Doshi. He was from Indore and belonged to an industrialist family. His cricket commentary from the 70's is often reminisced for his coverage in both Hindi and English.
Moreover, he is also remembered for his contribution in developing cricket commentary in Hindi by coining new terms. For eg; He called four (boundary) as 'chaukka', etc.

I know that I have missed out many names who are in no way out of the 5 very best broadcasters/commentators. However, this list was compiled of commentators from the 20th century and doesn't include any contemporary names to basically demonstrate to all of us, the dying art of sports commentary. Radio commentary is on the verge of extinction today and television commentary isn't doing much to revive the pleasure of listening to sports commentators.

एयरटेल इंडियन ग्रां प्री के पहले सत्र को अब बहुत कम दिन बाकी हैं| पर सवाल उठने लगे हैं की| दुनिया की दूसरी प्राइवेट ग्रां प्री अब आयोजको के लिए लाभ का सौदा होगी या फिर घाटे का क्योकि इसके सर्किट निर्माण पर जे पी एस आई ४० करोड़ डोलर की भारी रकम लगा चुका हैं|

खर्च ज्यादा:-जे पी एस आई ने दो से तीन करोड़ डोलर तो केवल (ऍफ़ ओ एम् ) को रेस होस्ट के लिए दी हैं| ४० करोड़ डोलर लगभग दो हजार करोड़ रूपये केवल रेस ट्रैक निर्माण पर खर्च किये हैं | उसने १०० से 200 करोड़ रूपये का टेक्स भी सरकार को दिया हैं |

टिकटों की आये :- ज्यादा आस टिकटों की ज्यादा बिक्री से भी हैं | जिसकी दर ढाई हजार से पैंतीस हजार रूपये राखी गयी हैं| बीस हजार टिकटों की ओसत बिक्री ग्रुप को दो अरब डॉलर की कमाई दे सकती हैं | जो ५५ बॉक्स कॉर्पोरेट के लिए हैं | उससे भी प्रति बॉक्स दो करोड़ के हिसाब से ११० करोड़ रूपये की जे पी एस आई कमाई कर लेगा|

जे पी एस आई की रणनीति :- ग्रुप ने ऍफ़ वन के अलावा दुसरे स्पोर्ट्स आयोजन भी कराने को कहा हैं| ताकि खर्च को कम किया जा सके|

मूल्यांकन:- हालांकि रेस के शुरू होने से पहले ही इस खेल को भारत जैसे विकासशील देश में जहाँ की प्रति व्यक्ति वार्षिक आये योजना आयोग २६ रूपये और ३२ रूपये तय करता हैं| वहां इस खेल की सफलता और जनता में इस खेल को मिलने वाले रेस्पोंस के प्रति संदेह प्रकट किया गया था| मगर फिर भी कोई भी बिजनस जोखिम पर ही कामयाब होता हैं| और फिर देर से सही भारतीय युवा रफ़्तार के दीवाने हैं जो अब नहीं तो बाद में में सही इसके प्रति अपनी रूचि अवश्य दिखाएंगे क्योकि भारत में इस खेल के टिकटों की ब्किरी अन्य विदेशी देशो के मुकाबले काफी बेहतर हैं| अन्य देशो में चाइना , मलेसिया , और अमेरिका से भारत की स्थिति बेहतर हैं| चाइना में दो लाख सीटो का स्टैंड खाली रहता हैं मलेशिया का भी ये ही हाल हैं| और अबुधाबी का भी अमेरिका में भी एशियाई देशो से जुदा हाल नहीं हैं| जहाँ दो लाख शमता वाले सर्किट में ५० हजार ही दर्शक आते हैं | केवल यूरोप के देशो में ही लोग अच्छी खासी संख्या में आते हैं जबकि भारत में एक लाख टिकटों पर ५५ हजार पहले ही बिक चुके हैं| जो एक अच्छा संकेत हैं |

It was a great experience with Mr. rajpal singh. He explained us all the basic things related to national sports development bill 2011 which is not passed . He discused all positive & negetive issues and lots more . After this great discussion we all are able to under stand what basically the bill is all about , how it is exposed and by whom it is being passed there are various factors which he explains us about this bill which we ever know
He firstly shows us the front page of the bill i.e. prilimary exposure draft after that he asked from us that what is a bill.................? then several students reply him then he explained it with his own view that we can say the bill is a written matter which is being enforced what so ever is wrtten on the bill weather it is harmfull or not once its passed then we can enforsed it there will be no objection and question raised on it

The govt. or the authorities in front of whom the bill is to be shown they have to decide weather the bill is to be shown they have to be decide weather the bill is going to harm any one or not . Firstly the govt. or the authorities which is going to passed it they readefully that bill very carefully and then think so many times and also take every once suggesion on that only they decide weather it should be passed or not.

Day 42.

Hello fellas and welcome to another smashing edition of BM's!!! - 'My 5ive' where we take up 5 points to understand any subject, in a simple and effective way.

India is slowly and steadily making its presence felt in the international market. From soccer clubs to cricket clubs, Indians are becoming a force to reckon with. And that's exactly what my notion is here to discuss with y'all. We'll be taking up 5 varying examples which will show what I just meant. And, these examples will show you why I call it the ' I ' effect.(I for Indian) So, let's get the blog rolling now, shall we ? -

1.) Blackburn Rovers -

Venky's India Limited, a subsidiary of VH Group which is an Indian company whose specialisation is chicken processing bought the English Premier League Club, Blackburn Rovers. The takeover of about £53 million took place in November 2010.
Furthermore, as a result of this deal, Blackburn Rovers became the first EPL team to land on the Indian soil to play against Pune Football Club, just a couple of weeks ago.
An Indian Chicken making company and an English soccer club, wow! No confusion, great combination!

2.) Racing De Santander -

The autonomous community of Cantabria includes a Spanish football club in Santander known as Real Racing Club de Santander, S.A.D. Ahsan Ali Syed, an Indian businessman, founder and chairman of Western Gulf Advisory which is an investment company, missed out the opportunity to buy Blackburn Rovers Football Club, which eventually fell in the hands of another Indian.
However, Ahsan Ali Syed managed to buy the Spanish football team in January 2011, for about $54 million.
The early bird might get the worm, but the second mouse gets the cheese!

3.) The Big Bash League -

Another example of what I like to call the ' I effect', can be seen on BBL (Big Bash league) or officially known as the KFC T20 Big Bash League.

The BBL, like IPL (Indian Premier League) is an Australian domestic cricket competition. The authorities of BBL are so impressed by the way the BCCI has earned through the inpouring of funds by allowing private investments.

So, Cricket Australia has realized that by giving the green light to private investors including Indian business tycoons, they too can be a happy side.

To steal ideas from one person is plagiarism. To steal from many is research!

4.) Liverpool Club -

The picture of the two men holding the Liverpool football club's sign could have been different, had GMR bought them, back in 2009. Yes, this ain't no joke.

GMR a major infrastructure company, with its headquarters in Bangalore, that also owns the IPL team - Delhi Daredevils could have bought Liverpool football club, an English Premier League Club, based in Liverpool, Merseyside.

The cost of buying a club like Liverpool was around £450 billion, that's more than the sum of the two clubs listed above. This news spread as GMR were approached to buy Liverpool due to the losses that it had by failing to qualify for the Champions League and also finishing seventh in the EPL's 2009-10 season.

If winning isn't everything, why do they keep score?

5.) The I - League -

Now, the last example of tonight's list is not exactly an Indian investor buying a foreign sports team, but rather an International company showing its interest in the Indian sports and tying up with an Indian company to own an entire league.

I'm talking about IMG, the International Management Group, a global sports and media group from New York City, collaborating with Reliance Industries Limited (RIL), based in Mumbai and has Mr. Mukesh Ambani as its Chairman.

IMG Reliance signed a 15 year partnership with the AIFF (All India Football Federation). Apart from that there were news circulating in January 2011 that IMG Reliance will also acquire the entire I-League, the Indian version of English Premier League for about 700 crore Indian Rupees.

Hope this news brings some good fortune. Otherwise as they say - Evening news is where they begin with 'good-evening', and then proceed to tell you why it isn't.

100 Years of Vijay Merchant

October 12 marks the birth centenary of Vijay Merchant, one of the greatest batsmen ever. The right-hander from Mumbai could play only 10 Tests, mostly due to the war. But in 150 First Class matches, he averaged 71.64, next only to Donald Bradman’s 95.14.

The greatest of All Indians

KR Guruprasad pays his tribute to the master batsman in DNA, saying before Tendulkar, Gavaskar’s closest rival in the Indian pantheon of batting was Merchant:

"Merchant was not coached during his growing up years and is largely said to have learnt the game on his own. He was only 5’7” but had the dexterity of a fox when it came to footwork. He is said to have filmed his batting and corrected himself often. And those who watched him play say that he played compact and flawlessly as if eliminating any errors from a craft that he has mastered over the years.

Against a visiting England side, Merchant played his last Test at the Kotla in Delhi in 1951. Forty-year old Merchant scored 154, his highest, and also became the oldest Indian to score a Test century. It stands till today.

When asked why he retired, he quipped that when a player retires “People should ask why instead of why not”.
After retiring as a player, he commentated on radio and became national selector in 1960’s and 70’s and blooded youngsters like Sunil Gavaskar, Gundappa Vishwanath, Ashok Mankad and Eknath Solkar. It was Merchant who brought in Ajit Wadekar to replace Mansour Ali Khan Pataudi as captain and ushered in one of the glorious chapters in Indian cricket history."

Master of the late cut

CricketCountry.com have reproduced Sunil Gavaskar's tribute to Merchant in a 1988 book, Vijay Merchant - In Memoriam.
"My lasting impression of his cricket was when he was urged to do a film called “The Spirit and Technique of Cricket” by Zul Vellani in 1964-65. I was among the schoolboys invited to field, while Tiger Pataudi, Farokh Engineer and Ajit Wadekar were to demonstrate different aspects of cricket. Merchant was to demonstrate the late cut – a shot for which he was renowned.

He came immaculately dressed in cream flannels, boots polished and an India cap firmly pulled down his forehead. He looked as if he had never been away from the cricket field, though he was holding a bat after 10 years, as he said later.

Kailash Gattani was to bowl to Merchant a few practice deliveries after which the shooting was to commence. Gattani, at that time, was not only sharp but was also rated by pundits of the game as the best user of the new ball in India. He came and bowled a ball short of length outside the off-stump. Merchant took one step back and across and late cut the ball to the third man fence. Pataudi, Engineer and Wadekar exchanged glances in amazement, while we schoolboys were left with open mouthed. It was as perfect a late cut as one could see – a demonstration by a Master, and that too off the first ball he faced!"

Let us pray that his soul rests in peace...I Know we are 3 days late but our feelings are important and we will do today for the INDIAN BRADMAN and hope for a good future cricket.......

Day 41.

This is part 3 of the 'Chinese Affair'. So, far we've covered the Sports Industry in China and the milestones which their athletes, officials and the country as a whole have attained. This is the last part of this series and the image above is sufficient to depict what I had to say in the past two blogs.
Like I said yesterday that tonight's blog will revolve around the biggest thing to happen in China's Sporting history, so it's time now to unravel the mystery and go back in history to grasp lore about the Sports Industry. -

Beijing Olympics : -

History -

The 2008 Summer Olympics that took place in Beijing, China was a major global multi-sport event.
With this, China became the 22nd nation to host the Olympics and the 18th nation to host Summer Olympics.
The opening ceremony alone cost over a $100 million and has been termed as 'spectacular' and 'spellbinding'.

Sports Industry -

The Beijing games were a mammoth moment in the country's Sporting Industry.
These games were a logistical success and the medals won by Chinese athletes brought national pride.
Economy is a very vital element when you're understanding sports industry. China received a settled sway in its swelling sports industry by hosting games of such magnitude however, the long-term impact on its economy is still vague.
These games were backed by amplification of sports properties in China.
Today, the Chinese people have shifted their loyalty from the regional sports clubs, which I wrote about yesterday, to the International clubs like Manchester United, Real Madrid, etc.
Private and foreign investments in the sports industry has increased. Also, their better integration of resources and developing an effective mode for the industry are something from which our authorities can learn a lot.

The Sports Industry is of great essence on both the micro and macro levels as it is so deeply and widely involved with the society. The Chinese authorities have made tremendous efforts to locate building and construction breakthrough. We can see a cyclical development of the Chinese Sports Industry through the events that we've discussed today and previously. They have also assured the development of athletics industry mass along with their healthy construction.

Day 40.

This is part 2 of 'The Chinese Affair'. In the first part I briefly talked about the Chinese Sports Industry. Tonight we'll be looking at 2 cardinal events which built and constructed the Sports Industry in China and are the vindication to the laurels achieved by Chinese athletes and sports industry together. So, let's get the blog rolling now, shall we? -

The Ping - Pong Diplomacy : -

History -

To understand sports, their amelioration, you need to understand the history behind them. Since I am dealing with the modern sports and industry, hence we'll be only going back about 40 years.
The first major beacon in the path to China's sports industry construction was the Ping-Pong Diplomacy (peculiar name though, I digress) of 1971 between U.S.and China.

Sports Industry -

This was like a cartel which was betwixt U.S.and China. The good thing for sports was that as a consequence of this alliance, American players began travelling to the 'land of the dragon', for ping-pong.
This also signaled China's entrance in the world of 'cultural revolution' and had denounced its self-imposition from world sports' participation.
These matches were a revelation for the Chinese Sports Industry who realized that Sports can be used to display their firepower.

Chinese Football Association : -

History -

The Chinese Football Association (CFA) was formed in 1924, but its real role in shaping the Chinese Sports Industry begins from 1994.
The CFA formed a professional football league which consisted of twelve local clubs.

Sports Industry -

Due to the construction of these clubs and leagues, a number of global bodies took their events to China.
For the first time Sports officials and players together were assisted with the market reforms that happened in the 90's.
Although the officials benefiting were very few and foreign sport properties were still a dream, the 90's or CFA per-se paved way to the biggest construction of industry of sport which took place in the following decade. (The Olympics). We also need to understand that development, building or construction of an industry takes time, it takes effort.

Alrighty then. So, I hope that we are now acquainted with the 2 most cardinal events that transpired China's Industry of Sports. However, there is a 3rd event and perhaps the most important one, which I'll take up separately in tomorrow's blog.
