Asiad: Somdev wins gold in tennis singles

Somdev Devvarman on Tuesday created history by becoming the first Indian to win a gold medal in the men's singles tennis event of the Asian Games after outplaying top seed and world number 44 Denis Istomin 6-1 6-2 in the lop-sided summit clash. With this win, Somdev won his second gold from the tennis competition, and seventh for India, having already captured yellow metal in the men's doubles with Sanam Singh. No Indian player had played in the gold-medal match in the men's singles before Somdev, world number 106, and the country had three bronze medals to show so far at the Games. Leander Paes ( Hiroshima in 1994), Mahesh Bhupathi ( Bangkok in 1998) and Prahlad Srinath (Bangkok in 1998) had won those three bronze medal in men's singles. In total, Somdev won three medals at this edition of the Games as he had earlier won a bronze in team event as well. India rounded off its tennis campaign with five medals, two more than what the country had got at the Doha Asian Games in 2006. At Doha, Leander Paes had won two gold medals - in men's doubles with Mahesh Bhupathi and in mixed doubles with Sania Mirza. Sania had won a sliver in the women's singles. The final match between Somdev and Istomin never rose to expected heights as the Uzbek was erratic and failed to curb his unforced errors, which helped Somdev's cause. The Indian broke the Uzbek twice in the opening set to take a comfortable 5-0 and served it out in the seventh game, having dropped his own in the sixth. Archer Deepika scrapes through to Asiad semifinals

GUANGZHOU: India's ace archer Deepika Kumari scraped past Tan Ya Ting of Chinese Taipei to move into the semifinals of the women's individual recurve event at the Asian Games on Tuesday. Deepika, a gold medallist at the Delhi Commonwealth Games, won a close battle 6-4 (26-29, 28-26, 28-29, 28-27, 29-28) against Tan in their quarterfinal match at the Aoti Archery Range. The match was tied at 4-4 at the end of four rounds. Deepika shot 29 in the shoot-off round. The Taipei archer needed a perfect ten from the final arrow to pull it through, but managed an eight and Deepika emerged the winner. Deepika will face the winner of other quarterfinal between top-seed Okhee Yun of South Korea and Farida Tukebayeva of Kazkahstan for a place in the last four. It was Tan, who defeated another Indian, Rimil Buriuly, 6-2 (22-27, 21-27, 28-27, 25-26) in the prequarterfinals. Deepika got the better of Erwina Safitri of Indonesia 7-3 (28-36, 26-26, 27-24, 30-28, 26-22) in prequarterfinals. The 16-year-old Deepika defeated Rand Almashhadani of Iraq 5-1 in the first round. She was ranked seventh in the qualification rounds while Rimil finished at 18th position. Veteran Dola Bannerjee and Bombayala Devi failed to qualify for the elimination rounds. The Asian Games, also known as Asiad is known to be the second largest multiple sports event after the Olympic Games.
All members who are affiliated with the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) are eligible to take part in the Games. The 45 members are part of the governing body of sports in Asia. As of this year, a total of 44 sports are presented in the Asiad.
The 2010 Asian Games (XVI Asiad) would be the sixteenth event which would begin from November 12th, 2010. The XVI Asiad are to take place in the Guangdong province in the People’s Republic of China.

Following the successful staging of the 2008 Beijing Games and Shanghai’s 2010 expo, the southern city of Guangzhou gets its chance to show off China’s relentless development and sporting might when it hosts the country’s second Asian Games. Some 9,700 athletes from 45 teams will compete in 42 sports. Dance sports, roller sports, dragon boat and cricket have been added as new sports, while new disciplines Go and Chinese xiangqi have been added to the chess programme.
The 2010 Asian Games would bring in a total of 42 sports events as compared to 28 events in the Olympic Games. The 42 games will be featured throughout the sixteen days of the event with the most unique games like dance-sport, roller sport and dragon boat debuting in the games. But, perhaps the most exciting sport to be making its debut in the Asian Games isCricket.
