POSTER PRESENTATION GUIDELINES

Posters can be a powerful method of communicating information. For one thing, people can study

posters at their own pace. It is also an opportunity for delegates to discuss information with the

poster presenter more extensively than they can during oral sessions. To assist you with your

presentation and make your experience of a poster presentation as effective as possible, please

read the following information:

PREPARATION OF POSTERS

SIZE

Posters should be no larger than 1m x 1m. Posters larger than these dimensions will exceed the

board; it is therefore necessary, that the poster adheres to the specified measurements.

VIEWING

Posters must be readable from 1.5 meters. To help you design a readable poster, here are some

suggested sizes of print:

Use UPPER and lower case for general content as the use of all-capital text is difficult to read.

Avoid using mixtures of type/font styles.

Tendulkar positive about World Cup

Cricket's grandest event might very well mark the swansong of the game's primary achiever Sachin Tendulkar and so he is looking forward to the event with bated breath. Waxing eloquent on the World Cup 2011, the Little Master predicts that it will be a "fabulous experience" and that the cricket-crazy Indian public will have a real spectacle to watch out for from Feb 19.
oneindiain121:http://thatscricket.oneindia.in/news/2010/12/24/tendulkar-positive-about-world-cup. "Back home in India, people are waiting to welcome all the cricket playing nations and it is going to be an experience of a lifetime because knowing how people follow cricket in India, it is going to be a fabulous experience," said the little master, who is busy preparing himself for the second Test against South Africa in Durban. The batting genius said that the event carries a similar magnitude of importance and excitement for the players who will be privileged to respresent their respective sides. Tendulkar, who shall be appearing in his 6th World Cup, says that the event holds a special place in his heart and that he hopes to be on top of his game for the upcoming edition. "It is something that all the players would cherish for the rest of their lives," said the 37-year-old genius. "It is too early to speak about the performance (of players) as it is all about what kind of form you are in during that tournament and how you peak at the right time, that's important," said the batsman.Tendulkar has certainly peaked in most of the World Cups he has played, holding the record for the most runs in the tournament - a total of 1,796 runs from 36 games at an average of nearly 50. On two occasions - in 1996 and 2003 World Cups, he made the most runs by an individual batsman in the tournament. Now, no batsman can top that.

Celtics, Magic rematch with a Christmas Day twist

ORLANDO, Fla. – Celtics coach Doc Rivers remembers when Boston overhauled its roster three years ago. Sure, the talent was there with the Big Three. So were the questions.
"When we made our move everybody told us you had to wait a year to put a championship team together," Rivers said before the Celtics practiced Friday in Orlando. "I didn't buy into that. Neither did our guys, and we proved everybody wrong."
Now imagine a major midseason shake-up.
The Celtics will face a reconstructed Magic team Saturday trying to duplicate the quick turnaround — only doing so in December — that propelled Boston to instant champions, giving this Eastern Conference finals rematch a Christmas Day remix.

No Dravid, Pathan in India's preliminary World Cup squad

Veteran batsman Rahul Dravid and off-colour pacer Irfan Pathan failed to find a place in India's 30-strong list of probables announced on Saturday for next year's ODI cricket World Cup in the sub-continent.

In a squad which didn't offer any major surprises, youngsters Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane were included along with established stars such as Sachin Tendulkar and Virender Sehwag. The squad would be pruned to half by next month and chairman of selectors Kris Srikkanth said whatever be the final combination, it would do well at the quadrennial mega-event starting February 19 and to be played in India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.

"As you know there are no big surprises. This is a probables team and everyone selects himself. There is one more month to go to select the final team and we will sit down and think calmly before finalising the team," Srikkanth told reporters after a meeting of the selection panel. "I am confident that the team will do well in the World Cup. They have been doing well in one-day cricket.

The World Cup is happening in the sub-continent and I am confident that the team will do well," he added.

Apart from the omission of the 37-year-old Dravid, who has not played an ODI since September last year, and Pathan, on the sidelines since February 2009 in ODIs, there aren't any surprise selections. The batting list expectedly features Tendulkar, Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir, Yuvraj Singh, Rohit Sharma and Suresh Raina. The 22-year-old Pujara along with Virat Kohli are among the youngsters picked at least in the preliminary squad. The bowling line-up is also on the expected lines with the pace attack led by Zaheer Khan featuring Ashish Nehra, S Sreesanth, Munaf Patel and Ishant Sharma. The spin department has the experienced Harbhajan Singh along with Amit Mishra, Piyush Chawla, Pragyan Ojha and R Ashwin. Apart from Mahendra Singh Dhoni, the probables list has three other wicketkeepers in Parthiv Patel, Wriddhiman Saha and Dinesh Karthik.

List of probables for World Cup: Mahendra Singh Dhoni, Virender Sehwag, Sachin Tendulkar, Gautam Gambhir, Virat Kohli, Yuvraj Singh, Suresh Raina, Harbhajan Singh, Zaheer Khan, Ashish Nehra, S Sreesanth, Munaf Patel, Ishant Sharma, Vinay Kumar, M Vijay, Rohit Sharma, Ravindra Jadeja, Ajinkya Rahane, Saurabh Tiwary, Yusuf Pathan, Parthiv Patel, R Ashwin, Wriddhimaan Saha, Dinesh Karthik, Shikhar Dhawan, Amit Mishra, Piyush Chawla, Cheteshwar Pujara, Pragyan Ojha, Praveen Kumar.

INAUGURAL FUNCTION OF THE 11TH INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON PUBLIC COMMUNICATION OF SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY 2010

Ganguly, Dravid shown the door, Kohli stays on

Rahul Dravid, Sourav Ganguly, Yuvraj Singh and Gautam Gambhir are among the big names released by their IPL franchises, along with Brendon McCullum, Chris Gayle and Andrew Symonds, while Virat Kohli is the surprise retention for his team for the next three seasons. Wednesday was the deadline for the franchises to name the players they would retain from their current squads and while there is no common thread running through the choices of players retained and released, the key factors seem to be form, brand appeal and age.

Kolkata Knight Riders, Deccan Chargers and Kings XI Punjab have decided not to retain any of their players, while all the other IPL franchises have held back at least one current player. Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians, the 2010 finalists, have retained the maximum of four players each, in the process parting with half of the $9 million salary cap available to teams.
According to the auction rules for IPL 4, teams can retain up to four players, only three of whom can be Indians. The retained players - who must have been part of the franchise's registered squads for the 2010 season - will be valued at $1.8 million for the first player, $1.3 million for the second, $900,000 for the third and $500,000 for the fourth.

Mumbai, as expected, held on to Sachin Tendulkar, the highest run-scorer of the 2010 season, offspinner Harbhajan Singh, West Indies allrounder Kieron Pollard and Sri Lanka seamer Lasith Malinga. Chennai took the Indian trio of MS Dhoni, Suresh Raina and M Vijay out of the auction, in addition to South African allrounder Albie Morkel, their regular opening bowler. Delhi Daredevils retained only Virender Sehwag, meaning Gambhir - their captain for the last two seasons - is in the auction pool.

The most interesting choice came from Royal Challengers Bangalore whose sole retention is Virat Kohli, currently on an impressive run in ODIs. There is no place for Dravid, their icon player, nor for Anil Kumble, their captain and the head of the state association. Kolkata's decision to drop Sourav Ganguly, the biggest cricketing name to emerge from the city and the face of the franchise's on-field persona, is a bold step.
Punjab's decision to release all their players was expected following their dismal 2010 season, which means Kumar Sangakkara, Mahela Jayawardene and Yuvraj Singh will go under the hammer.

Siddhartha Mallya, owner of the Bangalore franchise, said the decision to retain just one player was backed by financial logic. "You must realise that with retention, a big chunk of your budget gets taken away," Mallya told ESPNcricinfo. " Mumbai and Chennai have kept four players, which means that half their budget is gone. It finally comes down to how much money one was going to lose. We have a big balance sheet but we have lost $1.8 million for keeping one player. We still have about $7-odd million left but if we had retained four then we would have had to buy virtually an entire squad with the remaining half."
Age is not a universal disqualification. It didn't count in Tendulkar's case, nor in that of Shane Warne, Rajasthan's coach and captain, who was retained by Rajasthan Royals, along with Shane Watson, a day ahead of the deadline. One franchise official explained the difference: "Warne is a global brand so that only helps to promote the franchise."

If Rajasthan opted for Warne because they have always viewed the IPL as a global brand, Mumbai went with Tendulkar and Harbhajan for their popularity. Pollard and Malinga may have made the cut on account of being impact players, who have backed up their strong Twenty20 credentials with consistent performance.
Sehwag's match-winning abilities, coupled with his rapid emergence as a brand, clearly had a say in Delhi's decision to retain him. MS Dhoni and Suresh Raina must have been shoo-ins for Chennai following their compelling IPL and international form. Vijay's performances, coupled with his potential to attract a strong local fan-base, must have tilted the scales in his favour, while Morkel's proven all-round skills were always going to be an asset. If there is a stranger in this crowd, it could be Kohli. Despite his owners trumpeting his recent performances, Kohli is still work in progress. But he is young, ambitious and has the youth appeal - all qualities of the UB Group's target audience.

Asiad: Somdev wins gold in tennis singles

Somdev Devvarman on Tuesday created history by becoming the first Indian to win a gold medal in the men's singles tennis event of the Asian Games after outplaying top seed and world number 44 Denis Istomin 6-1 6-2 in the lop-sided summit clash. With this win, Somdev won his second gold from the tennis competition, and seventh for India, having already captured yellow metal in the men's doubles with Sanam Singh. No Indian player had played in the gold-medal match in the men's singles before Somdev, world number 106, and the country had three bronze medals to show so far at the Games. Leander Paes ( Hiroshima in 1994), Mahesh Bhupathi ( Bangkok in 1998) and Prahlad Srinath (Bangkok in 1998) had won those three bronze medal in men's singles. In total, Somdev won three medals at this edition of the Games as he had earlier won a bronze in team event as well. India rounded off its tennis campaign with five medals, two more than what the country had got at the Doha Asian Games in 2006. At Doha, Leander Paes had won two gold medals - in men's doubles with Mahesh Bhupathi and in mixed doubles with Sania Mirza. Sania had won a sliver in the women's singles. The final match between Somdev and Istomin never rose to expected heights as the Uzbek was erratic and failed to curb his unforced errors, which helped Somdev's cause. The Indian broke the Uzbek twice in the opening set to take a comfortable 5-0 and served it out in the seventh game, having dropped his own in the sixth. The second set was no different as Somdev again rode on double break after initial resistance from Istomin to seal the gold medal.Read more: Asian Games: Somdev Devvarman wins seventh gold for India .

Archer Deepika scrapes through to Asiad semifinals

GUANGZHOU: India's ace archer Deepika Kumari scraped past Tan Ya Ting of Chinese Taipei to move into the semifinals of the women's individual recurve event at the Asian Games on Tuesday. Deepika, a gold medallist at the Delhi Commonwealth Games, won a close battle 6-4 (26-29, 28-26, 28-29, 28-27, 29-28) against Tan in their quarterfinal match at the Aoti Archery Range. The match was tied at 4-4 at the end of four rounds. Deepika shot 29 in the shoot-off round. The Taipei archer needed a perfect ten from the final arrow to pull it through, but managed an eight and Deepika emerged the winner. Deepika will face the winner of other quarterfinal between top-seed Okhee Yun of South Korea and Farida Tukebayeva of Kazkahstan for a place in the last four. It was Tan, who defeated another Indian, Rimil Buriuly, 6-2 (22-27, 21-27, 28-27, 25-26) in the prequarterfinals. Deepika got the better of Erwina Safitri of Indonesia 7-3 (28-36, 26-26, 27-24, 30-28, 26-22) in prequarterfinals. The 16-year-old Deepika defeated Rand Almashhadani of Iraq 5-1 in the first round. She was ranked seventh in the qualification rounds while Rimil finished at 18th position. Veteran Dola Bannerjee and Bombayala Devi failed to qualify for the elimination rounds. The women's team comprising Deepika, Dola and Rimil won its maiden Asian Games medal by edging Chines Taipei in the bronze medal play-off Monday

GUANGZHOU 2010
Following the successful staging of the 2008 Beijing Games and Shanghai’s 2010 expo, the southern city of Guangzhou gets its chance to show off China’s relentless development and sporting might when it hosts the country’s second Asian Games. Some 9,700 athletes from 45 teams will compete in 42 sports. Dance sports, roller sports, dragon boat and cricket have been added as new sports, while new disciplines Go and Chinese xiangqi have been added to the chess programme.
The 2010 Asian Games would bring in a total of 42 sports events as compared to 28 events in the Olympic Games. The 42 games will be featured throughout the sixteen days of the event with the most unique games like dance-sport, roller sport and dragon boat debuting in the games. But, perhaps the most exciting sport to be making its debut in the Asian Games isCricket.

The city of London has been elected host city of the XXX Olympic Summer Games in 2012.

The London 2012 Games will be centred around the Olympic Park in east London, which will be the site of a number of new sports venues. Up to 180,000 spectators a day will enter the Park to enjoy the Games, making it the principal focus of Olympic activity in summer 2012.

The main venues – the Olympic Stadium, Aquatics Centre, Velodrome and BMX Circuit, as well as the hockey, handball and basketball arenas – will be easily accessible through a network of footbridges and walkways within the Park. The Olympic Village will be within walking distance of all the venues in the Park, enhancing the experience for athletes and officials. The use of other prestigious venues – such as Wembley Stadium for football, the All-England Club in Wimbledon for tennis, Lord’s Cricket Ground for archery and Horse Guards Parade for beach volleyball – is also a feature of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

The London 2012 Games include a four-year Cultural Olympiad, which is already underway. It will reach a climax with the Olympic Games Opening Ceremony on 27 July 2012, starting a 60-day festival of sport and culture across the UK, as the Olympic and Paralympic spirit crosses the world once again.

Miracle Unfolds as Asiad Returns to China

The opening ceremony of the 16th Asian Games reaches a climax when the main cauldron is lit by Olympic diving champion He Chong at the Haixinsha Island in Guangzhou on Friday,

For many who don't have the opportunity to serve for the Games, watching the competition will be another way to show support. But this time, the Chinese may less focus on the gold medal counts.

Sheer sporting success is far from enough for China which is trying to help the general public enjoy sports and good health.

The government encourages people from all walks of life to practice physical exercises during work intervals, setting up fitness facilities in residential communities and organizing mass sport activities.

There is still a long way to go in the development of mass sport, as Liu Peng, head of the State General Administration of Sport put it. The direction, however, is always towards the well-being of the people, just as Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao said in his report to the National People's Congress this March, "Everything we do we do to ensure that people live a happier life with more dignity and make our society fairer and more harmonious."

Friday 12 November 2010: The 16th edition of Asian Games officially opened with a glitzy gala ceremony on Friday, culminating years of planning for a massive event that is set to reinforce China`s regional sporting dominance. Tens of thousands of Guangzhou residents welcomed the Asian Games to their city and played their part in a spectacular interactive "Festival of Harmony" with the athletes and officials from the Games’ 45 National Olympic Committees as they sailed along the Pearl River.

The opening ceremony began with a spectacular light and fireworks show with Chinese music building up the tempo. The 650 feet high tower of fireworks illuminated the entire sky, announcing to the world that the Asian games had arrived in the biggest part of the continent. For the first time in the history of sports, the mega-ceremony was not held inside a stadium, instead it was held along the Pearl River in Haixinsha Island.

Prior to the ceremony, Chen Weiya, the director of the ceremony, who was also the assistant director of the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, revealed in a special interview that the ceremony "will surprise the world". He was not off the mark by even a whisker as the water/light theme was something no one else in the world had thought of, and its seamless execution took the level of the Asian Games one notch above.

The ceremony was attended by State Council of China Wen Jiabao, President of Pakistan Asif Ali Zardari, Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva and Chief Secretary for Administration of Hong Kong Henry Tang. Organisers promised the largest lighting show ever seen at a major sports event, based around a theme prominently featuring the local Lingnan culture and they kept their promise.

Decision review system bringing improvement: ICC

DUBAI — The recently adopted Umpire Decision Review System (UDRS) has brought significant improvement in overcoming umpiring errors in international matches and will be used more when it gets cheaper, an official said Wednesday.

The review system was introduced on a trial basis in June 2008, allowing players to challenge on-field umpires' decisions and refer them to the television official.

Teams are given two opportunities per innings to contest an on-field decision, losing a challenge for an unsuccessful review.

Cricket superpower India have been averse to the use of UDRS as the home boards have to pay for the necessary infra-structure supplied by the broadcasters, while some countries have not had access to certain technologies.

But International Cricket Council (ICC) General Manager Cricket David Richardson backed the UDRS and the use of technology.

"We think the UDRS has eased out pressure on the on-field umpires, nine out of ten teams are in favour of it" Richardson told reporters at ICC headquarters.

"In 23 Tests since October 2009, 84 possible on-field umpiring errors were recorded and 57 were corrected (by UDRS), which has lifted the correct decision percentage from 92.04 percent to 97.68 which is significant," said Richardson of the system, recently criticised by Indian skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni.

"I have mixed opinion on the UDRS," Dhoni said last week. "It is not something that gives cent per cent results. It is not always correct. It is like I have to buy a life jacket but it does not come with a warranty."

Richardson agreed India did not trust the UDRS.

"India feel they don't trust the accuracy of the technology and its also very expensive, but the ICC is always talking and trying to convince them of the use of technology," said Richardson, who played 42 Tests and 122 one-day matches for South Africa before joining the ICC.

"It is better to have a life vest than nothing."

Richardson agreed technology will not always be hundred percent.

"It is the safety net to prevent errors, and umpires will be safe rather than sorry (by the use of UDRS) and even we do not expect technology to provide conclusive answers in all the cases," said Richardson.

Richardson hoped with latest innovations, countries will use more technology in cricket.

"The technology use will go to frightening limits, the 3-D television and other innovations will come to effect and not using the technology will be a concern. I think it will be adopted more when it becomes less costly," said Richardson.

The UDRS will be used for the first time in the Ashes, beginning in Australia later this month, and also in next year's World Cup, to be jointly hosted by India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.

Zulqarnain Haider confirms threats, retires

In his first public comments since fleeing from Dubai and arriving in London on Monday, Pakistan wicketkeeper Zulqarnain Haider has confirmed that he received threats from unidentified people following his team's one-wicket win in the fourth ODI against South Africa and was told to get in line for the fifth match. As a result of the threats Haider - who is seeking some sort of protection in the UK - has announced his retirement from cricket.
"The way my situation is right now I am retiring from international cricket," Haider (24) said. "There is too much pressure on me, I have received threats, my family has received threats."
The issue of threats brings the matter within the ICC's purview, and its chief executive Haroon Lorgat said it was working with the PCB. "It is a team management issue in the first instance," he told ESPNcricinfo. "We would of course be interested in speaking to him but nobody knows where he is. So we won't make any comments until we are able to establish the facts."
Haider outlined his encounter with the person who approached him, without giving too much detail. "When I went out of the hotel to eat dinner once, he came up. He was alone but I felt there were two to three people behind him. I can describe him. He spoke Urdu but I cannot describe the accent accurately. He said you will make lots of money if you join us and help us. If not, then staying in the team could be difficult and we can make things difficult for you. I don't know why I was approached and others weren't."
Speaking to Geo, a leading Pakistani news channel, Haider was guarded about events of the previous 24 hours but seemed to indicate that he had sought some kind of "protection" from British authorities. He is thought to have been detained at Heathrow by immigration authorities for nearly four hours, before he moved to an undisclosed location.
"The fourth ODI, the things I was told to do I didn't, and the fifth ODI, what they wanted done I didn't do," Haider said. "That is why I did what seemed right to me and I came here. I can't tell what kind of threats I received to the country because my family is still in Pakistan."
When asked further about the nature of these threats and who they might have come from, Haider was unwilling and unable to reveal much more. "I am not accusing anyone of being a match-fixer. I only got one guy telling me that if you can't do this or that, there will be problems, or fix the fourth of fifth ODI. I don't want to say who it is, neither do I know so much about who it is. I have only played two-three ODIs." Asked specifically if he thought players within the team were involved, he said, "I am not saying they are or are not. Only God knows that. But I did what I thought was better for everyone. I just didn't want to sell my country, my mother. The country is like your mother and if you sell that you are nothing."
Haider also confirmed that he took his passport from the team management on the pretext of buying a SIM card for his mobile and left on Monday morning. Questions have been raised by a number of former players and board officials themselves about why he didn't approach the board first to report the threats, as is required by the anti-corruption code of conduct. "I felt if I told them, it would get worse for me and my family so I thought to come here. I know about British rules as I have been coming here for the last nine to ten years. They protect you.
"If I had told the PCB or players, it would've gotten out and then who knows? I don't feel it would've been better to tell anyone or authorities there. If I had told any of the other players, it might have put them in trouble also."
Though he didn't confirm that he had sought asylum in the UK, he did strongly indicate that he was seeking some form of protective status. "I cannot say where I am. I am not in a detention centre. Immigration authorities helped me a lot. The British government is such that if you are on the right path, they will protect you. They have rules [as far as asylum is concerned] and you can't enter until you have given reasons why. Immigration asked me what I would do. According to the rules they said go like this but hire a government lawyer. I don't have money right now to hire a private one but if this is the cost of walking on the right path, then so be it, I will bear it."
As the interview went on, Haider became emotional, ending it with a plea that his family - currently in Lahore - be helped and protected. "Help my family somehow. If it can be done, send my family here. For their security. I have my daily wages from the South Africa series and that is it. I will communicate with someone to see if they can help me financially."
Haider has not yet contacted the Pakistan High Commission in London. "We are not involved. Not to my knowledge. He [Haider] has not approached us as yet," an official at the High Commission said. When asked if the Pakistan board had approached them, he did not confirm or deny, saying that the "PCB should be handling it."

The glasses that can find anything
You know the feeling. Call it a senior moment, absent-mindedness or a sign of what a busy active brain you have. We’ve all asked ourselves that irritating question: “Where on earth did I leave my car keys?”
Now a team of Japanese scientists claim to have come up with the answer. And the secretive artificial intelligence project codenamed Smart Goggle does not stop at elusive keys. With Yasuo Kuniyoshi’s invention balanced on your nose, nothing – be it the remote control, mobile phone or iPod – should ever go missing again.
Simply tell the glasses what you are looking for and it will play into your eye a video of the last few seconds you saw that item....

She eats 10,000 calories each day in Coca-Colas, 15 hamburgers with fries and several kilograms of chocolate. What she eats in one day some children eat in half a year. Her breakfast consists of white bread, potato chips and two litres of coke. And she wants more.
When she last visited the doctor four years ago she had 110 kilograms. Unfortunately, she can no longer run and instead of walking she drags herself on the floor. Under such bodily weight her bones have already become distorted.
Mother Carolyn gives her daughter whatever the child wants. In the first week after she was born, when the baby cried because of stomach pains, the mother calmed her by feeding her with a bottle because she thought the child was hungry. “I gave her the bottle and she wanted more and more. It was not enough for her and she was constantly hungry”, Jessica’s mother says.....
