PROFESSIONALISM AND PROFESSIONALS.

Being a sportsperson I have learnt  it in right way.what i am going to clarify is all about professionalism. The success story of SAINA NEHWAL in London Olympic 2012.She was on the verge of losing a match and a medal like (tank of water in thorny desert).Though result was produced rather than achieved. It created more happiness than world most populated country.what i have learnt from that particular game of Bronze medal is professionalism. The approch of opponent was in the game till the first set and actually till last second before going out of injury. They were more hungry than us because of professionalism approach topwards sports.there medal tally was just behind U.S.A.Gone are the days of making excuse reagarding  proper facilities, equipments and systems. With Respect to our champion sportsperson, i need to say that we are far superior in terms of unprofessionalism. There are thousands of Saina, vijay, dutts, kom,Narang,Sushil,Vijender and many more.To extract raw talent and convert into professionals like sports champion of USA,CHINA,RUSSIA,UK,JAPAN.AUSTRALIA.We neend professionals rather than emotional.   Upcoming sportsperson will have to understand the sacrifice of unprofessional approcah.for example saina nehwal .Hope yhis current course of mine will lead to increase the meadl tally through professional approch.

Consistent Recognition And Rewards Necessary For Athletes To Bring In The Gold

WHILE THE LONDON Olympics has ensured that India has begun well on the path to becoming a sporting nation, it also brought to fore that recognition, accolades, and rewards are reserved for just the few that got in the medals. Business houses, few of which have been responsible for the transformation over the last few years, have jumped on the bandwagon to ensure they ride on the fame of the medalists to get a rub-off affect on their brands.
While success has to be celebrated and more so because it is in short supply in the country, it is also necessary to highlight the efforts of the winners and others consistently because the growth of a sporting movement is dependent solely on this factor.

The most telling story of the Olympics is shooter Vijay Kumar's statement after he won the silver medal. He told media that he was surprised that they were surprised that he won a medal: "I am a national champion since 2004 in my event. I won two gold medals with a new (Commonwealth) Games record in the Melbourne edition (2006), a gold and bronze in Doha Asia Games, a silver in World Championship, three gold and a silver in 2010 Commonwealth Games, two bronze in Guangzhou Asian Games, and if still my medal winning performance has surprised people, I can't help it." The media could have helped if they had followed and highlighted his achievements over the years. The Indian officials and corporate brands, would have then hyped him up like they were doing for Saina Nhewal, Vijender Singh, Mary Kom.

Now that Vijay has proved his worth, even the Sports Ministry has included him, along with wrestler Yogeshwar Dutt, for the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award, the nation’s highest honour for sportsmen for a specific achievement in a year.

While this is applaudable, though it is against the rules if the year of performance is taken into consideration, the achievements of shooter Ronjan Sodhi and boxer Vikas Krishan in 2011 have been relegated into the background. Hence Sodhi and Krishan will continue to win in obscurity and we will all express surprise when they win, but only in an Olympics meet. One wonders what award Vijay would have received if he had finished fourth in the Olympics, without a medal, though he has been a consistent winner in the international arena.

A sporting culture is about celebrating the success of our athletes at all levels and providing encouragement through all means at all times. This ensures that the athletes are always recognised for their exploits, pushing them to perform better and finally beat the best at the biggest event of them all. To develop this culture further, it is important for the Sports Ministry and the corporate world to work together and develop a continuous process of providing recognition, accolades and monetary benefits, not just wait every four years and gain some shine from the metal that the athletes bring in.
It is only then that the athletes can concentrate on beating the world, rather than bear additional pressure which will hamper their performance. India would have been a silver medal lesser (a lot for the country) if Vijay Kumar had looked around during the finals and felt despondent and hence distracted while discovering that there weren't many, if any, Indians or Indian media while he was shooting to win.

H.N.Girisha, India's silver medalist in paralympics, lately quoted as saying "Everyone here keeps asking your country is so large then why does your contingent here comprise only 10 people". This might be a mere quote for many of us but to those who are moved by hearing this it will certainly raise several thoughts about the conditions prevailing in the Indian sporting industry (except for Cricket). We CLEARLY need a well-structured system that resurrects the Indian sports and upheaves it to a whole new level. People who hold the authority to do the same must realize the exacerbating status quo of the field and this should be their top priority now!

World's Most Valuable Sports Properties

The National Football League (NFL) is ranked as the world’s most valuable sports property, with a value of US$4.5 billion. It is followed at the top of the table by three other American properties – Major League Baseball (MLB) (US$3.9 billion), the NBA (US$3.35 billion) and Nascar (US$1.9 billion).

The newest property in the list is the Indian Premier League (IPL), which is valued at US$1.6 billion - a staggering achievement for a two-year-old property.

The highest ranked European team property is the Ferrari Formula One team (7th) at a value of US$1.55 billion, followed by Manchester United Football Club (8th) at US$1.495 billion. The most valuable American sports club is the Dallas Cowboys (10th), with the NFL team valued at US$1.278 billion.

Tiger Woods (11th) is the highest rated athlete property with a value of US$1.25 billion, followed by Jack Nicklaus (16th) at US$1 billion. Golfers dominate the athletes' table because of the high earnings from designing golf courses; Tiger Woods is expected to earn over a billion dollars from designing courses in the next decade and will almost certainly eclipse his on-course earnings. David and Victoria’s Beckham Brand Ltd property (88th) is valued at US$375 million.

Many single annual events appear, led by the Wimbledon tennis championships (22nd) valued at US$900 million.

Unsurprisingly, the most valuable competition is the Fifa World Cup (5th) valued at US$1.7 billion, ahead of the Summer Olympic Games (15th) at US$1.04 billion. The Uefa Champions League (13th) is valued at US$1.1 billion, eclipsing the Summer Olympics due to its annual status.

NEW MEDIA- THE INTERNET AGE

There was very much to learn in today's class. However before I write what all we did today, it is important to give a quick recap of what we did in previous class.

What is new media?

Any form of media which replaces the established media is called new media.

What is journalism?

Journalism is an attitude which compels one to serve the masses with latest information in the form of news.

What is news?

News is any information which is:
  • Timely
  • Related to a person, subject, place, etc
  • Proximate/relevant to the person reading it
  • Has an element of surprise
  • Prominent and impactful

What are the features of web journalism ?

  1. Hypertext ie information can be rapidly uploaded and downloaded.
  2. Multimedia ie having audio, video and text at the same time
  3. Interactivity ie having instantaneous feedback mechanism
In today's class we learnt how a news column is structured. Any news article must be in the form of an inverted pyramid in which the downward order should be maintained with respect to the importance and the relevance of the information ie the most important information should be at the top and the less important information shall follow later.
Then we learnt about the limitations of web journalism which are as follows:
  • Continuous exposure to light can strain the eyes.
  • Internet is a heterogeneous medium with all its ills.
  • The screen size can in some cases cannot accommodate the whole news article.
  • To provide convenience the information should be very accessible and the customer guidance is must.
And then we learnt about the SRIF Theory (Strongest Relevant Information Theory).
This theory says that for any news information to be relevant to the audience, there must be some intersection between the 'Frame of Reference" and "Field of Experience".

On how professional sports are run and how that business cycle operates

All classes of Arjun sir have been very interesting and today was no exception. This time we learnt about how the business cycle in a professional sport operates. This was studied under the case study of IPL (Indian Premier League). First of all, there is an association which runs the league like the IPL Governing Council under BCCI. This association is broadly required to perform the following functions.
  1. Frame the rules of the competition.
  2. Look after the salaries and the working conditions of the athletes.
  3. Arbitration ie settle disputes arising during the competition.
Further we learnt about the various revenue streams which could be as follows:
  1. Franchisee Fees
  2. Broadcasting Rights (TV, mobile, internet, etc)
  3. Sponsorship Fees
Then we learnt on how such athletic events can be organised to earn profits. This included having exclusive stadium rights by the club itself rather than leasing them out from the state authorities. This will help a club to model or design the stadium according to its own team culture and give it a new identity. A stadium can include a multiplex system ie having a bar, lounge, marketplace to generate revenue other than the gate receipts, sponsorship hoardings, etc. Such a sports property has although not yet been made in India.
