CII's 'Sports in India'

The Confederation of Indian Industry will be organising a debate titled 'Sports in India' on the afternoon of December 21, 2012 at the Inspire Hall at Hotel Le Meridien in New Delhi.

Sport is a vital and universally recognized yardstick to measure a nation's well being. It is extremely imperative to boost the culture of Sports in India; in the true spirit as not only, does this ensure healthier and happier generations but also does the tremendous dual job of an adhesive by connecting the nation to the rest of the world, and building the nation's stature. While in principle, we all agree to this, but does the de-facto match the de-jure is the introspection we need to do!

The afternoon will start off with welcome remarks from Atul Singh (Chairman, CII National Committee on Sports and President & CEO Coca-Cola India & South West Asia) before the new Minister of State for Youth Affairs & Sports Jitendra Singh addresses the gathering. 

The first debate has the headline 'Government policy is the decisive factor in making India a sporting nation'. The panel will be moderated by Novy Kapadia. Speaking for the Motion will be Gopal Krishna (Director General of Sports Authority of India), Mr Kirti Azad (Member of Parliament, BJP), Capt. Amitabh (Sports Head, Tata Steel), Jwala Gutta (International Badminton player). Speaking against the Motion will be Mr Shashi Tharoor (Minister of State, Ministry of Human Resource Development), Vineet Joshi (Chairman, Central Board of Secondary Education), Suniel Shetty (Actor), Priti Srivastava (Vice President, Corporate Affairs, Reliance Industries).

The second debate has the headline 'Other sports are not making a mark in the cricket dominated Indian sports scenario'. Speaking for the Motion will be Askari Zaidi (Senior Vice-President, Corporate Communication, Jaypee Group), Raj Kundra (Entrepreneur), Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore (Olympic Medalist Shooter), Franz Gastler (Executive Director & Founder, YUWA). Speaking against the Motion will be Narain Karthikeyan (Formula 1 driver), Dr. Jaswinder Singh (Principal, Khalsa College), Priety Zinta (Actor), Joy Bhattacharya (CEO, Ignitee Sports).
