PRESENTING A POSITIVE PICTURE

After a series of controversies, the Commonwealth Games Organising Committee (OC) on Thursday presented a positive picture of the Games by springing many pleasant surprises during a ‘guided tour' for the media to witness the ‘soft' opening of the Games Village.

Among the many surprises, the training centre, with practice facilities for athletes in four disciplines, was quite prominent. The modern training venue — with facilities for athletics, weightlifting, wrestling and aquatics — boasts of infrastructure of international standards.

The picturesque athletics arena has a synthetic track as well as a throw field. The arena, equipped with floodlights, can be used for any State or National-level meet after the Games. On one side of the track, there is a gallery with a facility to accommodate 1,086 people.

OC Chairman Suresh Kalmadi asserted that the athletes would love the training centre because of its proximity to the Village. “These are wonderful training areas. You do not (normally) find training venues inside the Games Village,” Kalmadi said.

The main advantage of a training centre inside the Village is that the athletes can train without security concerns.
