Day 17.
Good evening friends. Today I will be taking up a very imperative subject i.e. 'Sports Development.'
There is another topic which is of equally pressing and that's the 'Regulation of Sports', but that's another topic for another day.
What do you understand by Sports?
Sport involves three things -
(1) Competition , (2) Physical Activity and (3) Skill.
If there are only 2 teams or 4 teams in a tournament, the competition is less, but, more teams increase competition. For example - English Premier League has many teams.
Sport is a very peculiar thing in India. It is not a National subject but, it's a State subject. And, as there so many priorities of the Government of India, that sport is not a priority of Central Government.
Sports Ministry is not seen as a very demanding Ministry.
Sport today is like a quick sand. Today, those who are running Sports as Federations have realised, that they have to work harder due to broadcasters.
The question arises how do we develop sports in India? The answer to this question came in the form of National Sports Development Bill 2011, which was proposed by Mr. Ajay Maken, who is managing Sports Ministry and Youth Affairs in the Central Government, however, the bill was rejected by the Cabinet and Mr. Maken was asked to reconsider or rework on the Bill. I will talk about the flaws in the Bill in another edition of BM.
Right now our Sports Authorities are not interested in Development, but in Regulation. It is very portentous to understand the expectation of Authorities. For eg - If a teacher is teaching, a student has to understand the expectations of that teacher. If the student understands, he'll be more dynamic.
Research is the first step in the Development process. The more sophisticated a sport becomes, the more research you have to do. Development takes a lot of hard work. For eg - To teach someone is not easy, you are giving your time and energy in developing a student, but to reject someone from teaching is easy.
The Sports Development should be seen as thorough all-encompassing operation that engrosses the wide area of - Organisations, Agencies, Policy Makers and Participants.
Mass Participation is another important dimension. To quite an extent, tensions are exist between different institutions and actors. These tensions come up from policies, practices and conflicting discourses. Those incharge of Sports Development must bring up better and more efficacious methods of developing interest and participation in sports.
I will stop here for today. So, everyone please comment on the above blog and give your suggestions on the ways to develop sports like Sport Development should commence at the grass root level, athletes should be carefully observed ( prevent doping), for their development and sports in general, etc, etc.
Thank you for Reading.
Thought Of The Day : - "What you spend years developing, someone could destroy overnight; ...........Develop anyway."

i agree totally with u Ahmad.there r various flaws in the bill which should be rectified as soon as possible...development in sports also shows the economic power of a nation and India needs to win medals at international level to enhance its prestige.
ReplyDeleteThanks for reading the blog and commenting.
ReplyDeleteFirst off you're right that economic development is related to sports development but I'm not indulging to economics right now, as my primary cynosure is developing sports.
Secondly, yes, India needs to win medals at international level, but that will happen only when the Authorities back them.
If you remember then some time back, Abhinav Bindra said that he has to pay the charges for ammunition as the authorities don't provide them.
U r right in ur approach Ahmad, but for the development of sports economic fluency is a must condition....China and USA are sporting powers bcoz they are economically vey opulent...can u expect a child to play a sport when he has no guarantee of his 2 meals a day???Nevertheless, it has nothing to do with the topic and it was just an additional point made by me of what I think....
ReplyDeleteAs far as ur second argument is concerned I completely agree with u that Government support is very essential for the triumph of an athlete...
@Anurag - You're talking about 2 meals a day or whatever...and then you say you mean nothing by that and that's got nothing to do with the topic. Well, please write relevant things.
ReplyDeleteSo, I'd suggest you to kindly make relevant statements for the sake of me and other readers.
Second thing, maybe you can cover the topic of economic fluency which you mentioned and explain to us all, which maybe I overlooked.
Lastly, if you've read my blog closely you'd understand that I never laid stress on the economics side much, but on development through our Authorities.
@ Ahmad- i was just trying to inter connect the things as nothing in this huge world is water tight....so it is completely relevant but needs a holistic approach to understand....
ReplyDeleteFor the second part of ur comment- ill definitely pay heed on this aspect....
@ Ahmad- for the last part of ur allegation- can u plz tell me how can our authorities develop sports without money???can u hire a world known coach by just giving him 200 bugs a day??
ReplyDeleteyou again didn't grasp my point. I mentioned it before, and I'll say it again, I ain't dealing with economics in this blog. I am only talking of general strtegies that our authorities can come up with.
