Obesity

Obesity can be defined as excessive enlargement of the body's total quantity of fat.There is no biological reason for men and women to get fatter as they grow older.But now a days, obesity has been called the main health problem of modern society.Childhood obesity is also becoming more prevalent.The seriousness of this situation is underlined by a similar rise in over weight related diseases.Some main facts related to obesity:
  • Obesity can cause hypertension,diabetes,renal diseases,bladder disease,respiratory disease,heart disease, endometrial cancer etc.
  • A person is considered over weight when his/her body weight is 20% higher than the average weight in accordance with height and body frame.
  • Before adulthood body fat increases in two ways;By enlargement of individual fat cells,called fat cell hypertrophy,or by an increase in the total no. fat cells, known as fat cell hyperplasia.
  • Under normal conditions the body weight is gained when intake of food in terms of caloric values is taken in a larger quantity than its daily requirement.
  • Energy intake = Energy expenditure then, body weight is stable.
  • Energy intake is more than energy expenditure then, body weight increases.
  • Energy intake is less than energy expenditure then, body weight decreases.
  • People who have BMI between 20-24.9 are considered normal;25-29.9 are overweight;above 30 are called obese.
Causes of obesity:
  • Physical inactivity
  • Heredity or genetics
  • Socio economic factors like rich people who enjoy luxury are because of their comfort living.
  • Psychological factors like depression, anxiety,loneliness etc.
So, the best way to control weight is to have a balance diet with at least half an hour of daily exercise.Diet should be taken by calculating caloric requirement according to the height and weight.
Beware, skipping of meals is harmful and it will result in overweight.Try to take 4-5 meals per day at the gap of 3-4 hours.
Never use any kind of supplements to reduce weight.They have very harmful side affects.
